Any form of work means it\u2019s important to have periods where you can step away, uplug, and reset. But like other workplace rights and regulations, vacation for employees is a complicated topic in Ontario.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can be tricky to understand, so we\u2019re breaking it all down in this blog for you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is considered a part-time employee?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tpsgc-pwgsc.gc.ca\/remuneration-compensation\/services-paye-pay-services\/paye-information-pay\/vie-life\/emploi-change-employment\/change-heures-hours-eng.html#toc5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Government of Canada<\/a>, part-time employment is defined \u201cwhen your assigned hours are more than one-third of&nbsp;<em>but<\/em>&nbsp;less than a normal full-time work week or one-third&nbsp;<em>or<\/em>&nbsp;less of a normal full-time workweek.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are a part-time worker who works more than one-third of, but less than a normal full-time workweek, you are subject to the terms and conditions of your employment agreement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if you are someone who works one-third or less of a normal full-time workweek, you are only required to follow certain terms and conditions, such as earning vacation leave and union dues deductions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the paid time off (PTO) benefits?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In terms of the amount paid for vacation, salaried employees are given paid time off with full salary continuation, while hourly employees get 4% of all earnings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Any other benefits offered?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are working a minimum of 12 hours per week on a part-time basis in Canada, you could be eligible to participate in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/treasury-board-secretariat\/services\/pension-plan\/active-members\/working-part-time.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">public service pension plan<\/a>. You aren\u2019t eligible if:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You work part-time an average of less than 12 hours a week<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You have been employed part-time in the public service since July 3, 1994 and have not chosen to contribute within the prescribed period<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are working on an \u201cas needed\u201d basis\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are working seasonal for six months or less, until you\u2019ve completed six months of continuous service<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You have reached the age of 71 or 35 years of pensionable service<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/treasury-board-secretariat\/services\/pension-plan\/active-members\/working-part-time.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">calculate your pension here<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And while this isn\u2019t technically a benefit, paid holidays are probably the best part of PTO when it comes to part-time work. In Canada, part-time employees aren\u2019t paid for designated paid holidays. Instead, they\u2019re paid a&nbsp;<em>premium.&nbsp;<\/em>That means employees are paid 1.5 times their hourly wage for each hour or part of an hour worked on these days.
