There are also non-pain related symptoms to consider.\n<h3 id=\"non-pain-related-symptoms\">Non-pain related symptoms<\/h3>\nIt\u2019s important to acknowledge that there is premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and its more severe form, premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).\n\nAccording to UK-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mind.org.uk\/information-support\/types-of-mental-health-problems\/premenstrual-dysphoric-disorder-pmdd\/about-pmdd\/#:~:text=Premenstrual%20dysphoric%20disorder%20(PMDD)%20is,phase%20of%20your%20menstrual%20cycle.\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mental health wellbeing charity Mind<\/a>, premenstrual dysphoric disorder causes a range of <em>\u201cphysical and emotional symptoms every month during the week or two before your period.\u201d<\/em> They explain that while many may experience symptoms of PMS, PMDD symptoms can be much worse, and can have a serious impact on your life. <em>\u201cExperiencing PMDD can make it difficult to work, socialise, and have healthy relationships. In some cases it can also lead to suicidal thoughts.\u201d<\/em>\n\nConfused? So are the symptom bearers. <em>\u201cThe best way to describe it is that, once a month, I press my own self-destruct button and literally let my (normally very happy and satisfying) life implode around me. Then when the dark thoughts lifted and cleared, I spent the next 2 weeks trying to pick up the pieces.\u201d<\/em>\n\nWhat employers can do is create an inclusive menstruation leave policy, that can empower and encourage people who have periods to take the rest they need, but don\u2019t know how to ask for it.\n<h3 id=\"is-menstrual-leave-the-same-as-sick-leave\">Is menstrual leave the same as sick leave?<\/h3>\nIt is not to be confused as a replacement for sick leave, but rather, an additional benefit. And if it\u2019s the first time you\u2019re hearing about it \u2013 here\u2019s a reminder that it\u2019s actually not a new concept.\n\nA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/worklife\/article\/20220426-could-menstrual-leave-change-the-workplace\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">BBC article by Ali Francis<\/a> did a deep dive into this. In it, Francis shared how menstrual leave has actually existed in various forms around the world for at least a century and included examples such as when:\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">The Soviet Union introduced a national policy in 1922.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Japan introduced period leave in 1947.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Indonesia introduced menstrual leave in 1948.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nSpain also <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/news\/new-updates\/spain-passes-law-for-menstrual-leave-becomes-europes-first-country-to-give-special-leave\/articleshow\/98013125.cms?from=mdr\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">made headlines<\/a> this year after becoming the first European country to introduce menstrual leave.\n<h3 id=\"what-else-can-employers-do\">What else can employers do?<\/h3>\nPeriod stigma can often lead to silence around menstruation, that can <a href=\"https:\/\/graceandgreen.co\/ethical-business\/the-case-for-free-period-products-in-the-workplace\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cause people to feel embarrassed and unsupported<\/a>. To change this, progressive employers have been leading changes to look after their employees wellbeing, by providing free tampons and sanitary products at work.\n\nForward thinkers such as the non-profit organisation, <a href=\"https:\/\/wellcome.org\/?gclid=Cj0KCQjw6cKiBhD5ARIsAKXUdyalJNs5RD_lLrHiHxkoaoIc5ttB5aQN3XJMOtqOQxcvFdvdKB_-k-YaAhNoEALw_wcB\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wellcome Trust<\/a> first started providing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/what-happened-when-we-provided-free-tampons-office-charlotte-hussey-1e\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">free tampons and sanitary towels<\/a> in their offices in both women&#8217;s, accessible, and unisex bathrooms used by staff as far back as 2019. They were also available in mens bathrooms in case people who identify as trans or non-binary needed to access these products.\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Hiding menstruation products can be a tricky business, causing stress.\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-12529 size-full\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/pexels-sora-shimazaki-5938355-scaled.jpg\" width=\"2560\"\/><em>Ever had to hide a pad in your bag or up your sleeve with the hopes that no-one notices the rustling sound in this quiet office? Providing menstruation products help reduce stressful toilet trips.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-are-companies-introducing-paid-menstrual-leave\">Why are companies introducing paid menstrual leave?<\/h2>\nIn progressive workplaces, introducing menstruation leave is a no-brainer. Many who have introduced a period leave policy recognise it as a necessary step to take to improve wellbeing in the workplace, destigmatise periods in the workplace and embrace diversity and inclusion.\n\nOne of the most high profile companies who offer menstrual leave is Zomato, an Indian food delivery startup. They introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zomato.com\/blog\/period-leaves\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a period leave policy<\/a> back in 2020 where people who identify as women can take up to 10 days of period leave a year.\n\nThere are also nationwide movements around the world. Over in Australia, law firm Maurice Blackburn is part of a national campaign in partnership with The Australian Workers\u2019 Union to introduce menstrual and menopausal leave.\n\nFrom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2023\/mar\/08\/keep-working-like-nothing-is-wrong-women-make-the-case-for-paid-menstruation-leave\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a survey of a thousand union members<\/a>, some pretty shocking results came to light:\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">75% of respondents said that they suffered from painful periods.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">What\u2019s worse is, of that group, 73% said that their periods were <em>\u201cso painful, they either struggled to focus, or it affected their ability to perform their work\u201d; <\/em>and<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Despite these struggles, 74% said <em>\u201cthey did not feel comfortable talking to their line manager about taking leave or requesting flexible work arrangements to manage their symptoms.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\nElsewhere in the world, Scotland is notably one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-51629880\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first nations in the world to make menstrual products free<\/a> in a bid to end period poverty. According to the BBC, MSPs unanimously approved the Period Products bill in November 2020, a bill introduced by Labour MSP Monica Lennon who had been actively campaigning to end period poverty since 2016.\n\nWhat these results show us is that women have in fact been working like there is nothing wrong and society is used to this, but change, for the better, is finally on its way. And, as Jelisa Castrodale says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/akzaea\/some-companies-are-finally-offering-period-leave\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in their article for Vice<\/a>, <em>\u201cThere is a growing message that people who menstruate shouldn&#8217;t have to be ashamed of their own bodily functions.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>\n<em>\u201cThat makes it all the more likely that other companies, in more industries, in more countries, could follow Zomato&#8217;s lead.\u201d <\/em>It\u2019s no wonder why many see legalised time off as the solution to end the stigma against periods.\n\nBut with embarrassment, the worry of being judged, and the stigma that surrounds periods as barriers have been in place for years built by both men and women \u2013 the road ahead is a long one, but the right one to take.\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"There are a lot of menstruation products to consider if you're providing them in your workplace. \" class=\"alignnone wp-image-12528 size-full\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/pexels-rodnae-productions-4911023-scaled.jpg\" width=\"2560\"\/><em>If you\u2019re thinking about providing menstruation products for your employees, don\u2019t forget to be inclusive and provide tampons and pads, and have bins available in women\u2019s, men\u2019s, and accessible toilets.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-pros-and-cons-of-a-menstrual-leave-policy\">What are the pros and cons of a menstrual leave policy?<\/h2>\nFrom destigmatising periods in the workplace to potential harassment from toxic employers and colleagues, there are a few pros and cons for us to unpack.\n\n<strong>Some inclusive pros<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Destigmatises periods in the workplace:<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/period-leave-from-work#benefits\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Healthline<\/a> suggests that by having open conversations about periods and period pain, this can eliminate stigma around menstruation, boost well-being and increase workplace productivity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Increased diversity and inclusion:<\/strong> Cherie Hoeger, the CEO and Co-Founder of menstruation product company Saalt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/juliawuench\/2020\/08\/17\/the-economic-and-moral-case-for-menstrual-leave\/?sh=13ba38c27019\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">suggested to Forbes<\/a> that <em>\u201cenabling and empowering women to stay in leadership positions is statistically proven to improve profits, and having concrete, inclusive policies in place opens more job opportunities to women and members of the transgender community.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<strong>Some questionable cons<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Embarrassment over telling employers you\u2019re on your period:<\/strong> Not everyone is willing and able to talk about their periods in the workplace. Especially if you\u2019re in a toxic one where you might get harassment from toxic managers and colleagues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Stigma over periods in the workplace continues to be an uphill battle:<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2020\/11\/20\/business\/period-leave-asia-intl-hnk-dst\/index.html#:~:text=Japan%20introduced%20its%20period%20leave,while%20struggling%20with%20menstrual%20pain.\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">In Japan and South Korea<\/a>, stigma continues to be the reason why women may be reluctant to take period leave, even if they\u2019re presented with the opportunity to take period leave.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Some people just don\u2019t get it:<\/strong> There\u2019s always one person that ruins it for everyone. In the case of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.askamanager.org\/2022\/05\/my-male-coworkers-are-insisting-on-taking-period-leave.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">this workplace<\/a>, an employee decided to abuse the fact that managers are not allowed to question reasons for period leave, even though it was proven that they do not identify as a woman.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"tips-for-introducing-menstrual-leave-in-your-workplace\">Tips for introducing menstrual leave in your workplace<\/h2>\nIf you\u2019re interested in introducing a menstrual leave policy in your workplace, here are a few tips for you to consider:\n<h3 id=\"use-a-menstrual-workplace-policy-template\">Use a menstrual workplace policy template<\/h3>\nIf you\u2019re after some guidance on how you can write your policy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vwt.org.au\/projects\/menstrual-workplace-policy\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">check out this one<\/a> by Australian founded company Victorian Women\u2019s Trust.
