This could be experienced through backache and other muscle pain, carpal tunnel syndrome (a pinched nerve in the wrist which causes hand and arm pain and numbness), arthritis and tendinitis.\n<h2 id=\"how-can-working-from-home-impact-ergonomics\">How can working from home impact ergonomics?<\/h2>\nOne day, you decide to try \u2018working from bed\u2019. The next day &#8211; you\u2019re a millennial with back pain. My friend, you\u2019ve just experienced the consequences of bad ergonomics (welcome to the club!).\n\nPeople often forget about <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/resources\/workplace-health-and-safety\/\">workplace health and safety<\/a> when they\u2019re working remotely, but this shouldn\u2019t be the case. Just because homeworkers have comfy places to sit doesn\u2019t mean that\u2019s actually good for their overall comfort.\n\nIt\u2019s important to have an ergonomic workstation set up wherever you\u2019re clocking in from.\n\nUnder the restrictions of the pandemic, many people threw together workspaces at home &#8211; often resorting to kitchen counters, couches and beds in replacement of desks.\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/resources\/remote-work-report\/\">As many businesses implement remote and flexible working long-term<\/a>, helping employees set up ergonomically is an absolute must.\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-benefits-of-ergonomics\">What are the benefits of ergonomics?<\/h2>\nThe number one benefit of good ergonomics is it prevents injury for your workers. When you reduce aches and injuries, you can trigger a domino effect of positive impacts.\n<h3 id=\"reduced-absenteeism\">Reduced absenteeism<\/h3>\nIt\u2019s not an overstatement to say that injuries caused by bad ergonomics can be debilitating. Intense back pain can leave anyone bedbound, and carpal tunnel can make typing a nearly impossible task.\n\nAccording to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safeworkaustralia.gov.au\/system\/files\/documents\/1912\/work-related_musculoskeletal_disorders_in_australia_0.pdf\">SafeWork<\/a>, musculoskeletal disorders provide a significant \u2018economic burden\u2019 to both businesses and employees.\n\nIn Australia, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ergonomics.com.au\/common-workplace-injuries-australia-prevent\/\">25%<\/a> of back pain sufferers in the 18-55 age group are taking 10 or more days off per year.\n<h3 id=\"better-engagement\">Better engagement<\/h3>\nWhen you\u2019re experiencing physical discomfort, it\u2019s very hard to stay focused and engaged for extended periods of time. Workers suffering from MSD may become frustrated at the lack of proper equipment provided to them by their employer.\n\nTeams understand that, in most cases, MSD is preventable with intervention.\n<h3 id=\"enhanced-productivity\">Enhanced productivity<\/h3>\nBy a similar token, when your employees are in good physical health, they are likely to be more productive. They won\u2019t be distracted by frustrating niggles, or feel the need to be constantly fidgeting to find a better working position.\n<h3 id=\"a-culture-of-safety\">A culture of safety<\/h3>\nAs well as having clear positive physical impacts, providing good ergonomic solutions is also good for team morale and <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/blog\/employee-value-proposition-evp\/\">business reputation<\/a>. Creating this culture of workplace health and safety reflects well on your company and sends a clear message to your team that you care about their comfort.\n<h3 id=\"fewer-worker-compensation-claims\">Fewer worker compensation claims<\/h3>\nAccording to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safeworkaustralia.gov.au\/system\/files\/documents\/1912\/work-related_musculoskeletal_disorders_in_australia_0.pdf\">SafeWork<\/a>, MSDs as a result of working account for the majority of compensation costs for Australian workers. As so many MSDs can be prevented by implementing good ergonomic practices, it\u2019s well worth the investment for your team and for your business.\n\n<h2 id=\"8-simple-ways-to-improve-ergonomics-in-your-workspace\">8 simple ways to improve ergonomics in your workspace<\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"\"><\/h3>\n<h3 id=\"1-invest-in-better-chairs\">1. Invest in better chairs<\/h3>\nAs it\u2019s the most commonly considered of the ergonomic principles, let&#8217;s talk about office chairs.\n\nSo, should you be sitting on a swivel chair, stool, exercise ball or one of those fancy posture chairs? While most will opt for the classic office swivel chair, there are a few ergonomic features that differentiate the good from the bad.\n\nAccording to the UK\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.physiomed.co.uk\/uploads\/guide\/file\/15\/Physiomed_Sitting_Guide_-_Buying_a_Chair_Digital.pdf\">PhysioMed<\/a>, the chair should meet these specifications;\n<ul>\n<li>The seat should be at least one to three wider on each side of the sitter<\/li>\n<li>The chair should have lumbar support &#8211; it cushions the lower back<\/li>\n<li>They need to be fully adjustable chairs, with the seat height, back and armrests able to be moved to fit<\/li>\n<li>Ideally, the seat should tilt slightly forward, but the same effect can also be provided with cushioning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nThe perfect chair will be comfortable for sitting for extended periods of time, supporting the sitter to keep a straight spine (which is difficult to do naturally for long periods) and prevent slumping. Image via Samule Sun.\n<h3 id=\"2-monitors\">2. Monitors<\/h3>\nAnother must in the equipment department are monitors. Laptops are great for convenience and mobility, but the constant looking down can cause neck strain and threaten good posture.\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/health\/2020-03-31\/working-from-home-how-to-set-up-your-office\/12098540\">Experts say<\/a> that when we\u2019re sitting and working, we should be looking directly in front of us. If workers use two computer screens, they should be at a similar height to avoid repetitive motion of the head. A monitor should be about arm\u2019s length away from the worker.\n\nIf it\u2019s not possible to provide monitors to your team, advise them to elevate their laptops in some way &#8211; whether that\u2019s with a laptop stand or with something like a stack of books. This will require a separate keyboard and mouse to prevent excessive reaching, but these are relatively cheap to acquire.\n\nIf using a laptop, workers should also consider increasing the size of the text on their screen to prevent eye strain.\n<h3 id=\"3-headsets\">3. Headsets<\/h3>\nDoes your team use the phone frequently? Even if they\u2019re not in a customer service role, they might be consistently using their mobile or desk phone to communicate or complete their role.\n\nWe\u2019re all guilty of holding a phone between our ears and shoulder, feeling the unpleasant muscle strain of the neck. This seemingly innocuous movement can be an injury risk, easily prevented by the use of headsets.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Man wearing headset\" class=\"wp-image-2556 size-large\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/EmploymentHero_26-05-202122853-683x1024.jpg\" style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 16px;\" width=\"683\"\/>\n\nWe\u2019re calling it; headsets are the hot accessory of 2022.\n<h3 id=\"4-consider-standing-desks\">4. Consider standing desks<\/h3>\nStanding desks are the ergonomic item du jour and for good reason. We know that experts are concerned about sedentary behaviour, and sitting for 7.6 hours five days a week &#8211; can be a big contributor to this.\n\nThere are some pretty amazing statistics about the positive impacts of standing desks.\n\nAs reported in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2018-08-06\/standing-desks-are-good-value-for-money-research-finds\/10077266\">ABC<\/a>; <em>\u201cGiving standing desks to 20 per cent of office workers would save $84 million in healthcare costs and 7,492 health-adjusted life years by preventing obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, according to the first evaluation in Australia.\u201d<\/em>\n\nIt\u2019s worth noting, however, that standing up all of the time is not necessarily recommended as it can transfer strain to the legs and feet. Moving between sitting and standing throughout the day is the optimal situation to reduce strain and awkward postures throughout the body.\n<h3 id=\"5-encourage-movement-breaks\">5. Encourage movement breaks<\/h3>\nIf a standing desk is not on the cards, workers should at least take <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/blog\/deskercise\/\">regular movement breaks<\/a> to give their bodies some relief from sitting.\n\nThis is especially true for those working remotely. When in the office, we\u2019re used to walking long distances to the kitchen or bathroom, we\u2019re leaning over to talk to colleagues or dropping by their desks. At home, these opportunities disappear.\n\nEncourage your team to take \u2018microbreaks\u2019 throughout the day. Once an hour they should <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/blog\/health-apps-wfh\/\">take a stretch<\/a> or a short walk. This can refresh the body and brain; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/worklife\/article\/20190312-the-tiny-breaks-that-ease-your-body-and-reboot-your-brain\">BBC<\/a> suggests microbreaks can improve concentration and improve workers&#8217; perception of their jobs.\n<h3 id=\"6-provide-virtual-or-in-person-yoga\">6. Provide virtual or in-person yoga<\/h3>\nRegular movement is another important part of preventative health, and <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/blog\/top-5-yoga-apps-iso\/\">yoga is a great choice<\/a> to tackle common MSD symptoms.\n\nAccording to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/wellness-and-prevention\/9-benefits-of-yoga\">Johns Hopkins<\/a>, yoga should be the first point of treatment for chronic back pain. We believe that this classic meeting style is incredibly underrated.\n\nWhen we walk and talk with our colleagues &#8211; whether it\u2019s in person or over the phone &#8211; we are able to <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/blog\/an-introduction-to-mindfulness\/\">communicate mindfully<\/a>.\n\nAs well as <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/blog\/self-care-in-the-workplace\/\">giving our bodies a break<\/a> from sitting or standing in one spot, we <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/blog\/doom-scrolling-control-your-social-media-habits\/\">disconnect from our notifications<\/a> and other distractions and focus more completely on our conversations.\n<h3 id=\"8-be-conscious-of-environments\">8. Be conscious of environments<\/h3>\nEnvironmental risk factors are an often forgotten part of ergonomics.\n\nWhen you\u2019re designing or advising on workspaces, it\u2019s also important to solve these common issues;\n<ul>\n<li>How is the workspace lit? Are employees experiencing fatigue under fluorescent lights or straining their eyes in shadowy rooms? How can we create a gentle environment with lighting that feels organic?<\/li>\n<li>What kind of sounds is your employee hearing? Are they having to battle against constant roadworks or noisy phone calls? Is their space conducive to deep work?<\/li>\n<li>Is your employee\u2019s workspace a comfortable temperature?
