After all, these are some of the best forms of self-care \u2013 and we all know that we could do with a little TLC after a long day at work.\n\nWe often think of self-care as an activity for personal time. It\u2019s the relationship you have with yourself and showing yourself the love that allows you to be your most authentic, effective and wonderful self. It involves prioritising your own health and wellbeing, <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/blog\/boundaries-at-work\/\">setting boundaries<\/a> and putting yourself at the top of your care list. It also helps protect your mental health.\n\nPrioritising yourself during the working day can help you <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/blog\/an-introduction-to-mindfulness\/\">be more present<\/a>, motivated and productive. Think about this. If you\u2019re actively <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/blog\/occupational-stress\/\">managing your own stress levels<\/a> and mental health, chances are you\u2019ll be more organised and grounded for the workday.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"gif of a man taking deep breaths - self care workplace\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6025\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/relaxing-at-work.gif\" width=\"480\"\/>\n<em>Breathe in, breathe out\u2026 and prioritise self care<\/em>\n<h2 id=\"how-important-is-self-care-at-work\">How important is self-care at work?<\/h2>\nIn our recent <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/resources\/wellness-at-work-report\/\">2022 Wellness at Work Report<\/a>, we found that most of us are feeling the full force of the last two years and it\u2019s presenting us with increased rates of <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/blog\/health-apps-wfh\/\">poor work-life balance<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/blog\/signs-that-you-are-suffering-burnout\/\">burnout<\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/resources\/wellness-at-work-report\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Wellness at work 2022\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3338 size-full\" height=\"593\" src=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/EH_0345_Wellness2022-InLIneForm.jpg\" width=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/04\/EH_0345_Wellness2022-InLIneForm.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/04\/EH_0345_Wellness2022-InLIneForm-300x174.jpg 300w, https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/04\/EH_0345_Wellness2022-InLIneForm-768x445.jpg 768w, https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2022\/04\/EH_0345_Wellness2022-InLIneForm-440x255.jpg 440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a>\n\nOur major finding in the report was that the <strong>majority (53%) of workers in Australia agree with feeling burnt out from their work in the last three months<\/strong>.\n\nIf you\u2019re unsure what constitutes burnout, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.headspace.com\/mindfulness\/burnout\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Headspace<\/a> explains it as the feeling of being constantly<em> \u201cexhausted, emotionally drained, unproductive, and unmotivated at work\u201d.\u00a0<\/em>\n\nIf we take a look at work-life balance, it is clear to see that everyone is exhausted \u2013\u00a0and unfortunately, it goes hand-in-hand with burnout. 52% of Australian workers rated their work-life balance as poor or average, which has the ability to seep into every aspect of our lives and impact our mental health.\n\nWhat\u2019s more concerning is that we found that employees who stated that they had poor work-life balance over the last three months were 76% more likely to also have felt burnt out.\n\nThe journey from poor work-life balance to burnout is clear, with the cycle of workplace stress continuing, <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/resources\/guide-to-boosting-employee-mental-wellbeing\/\">eroding your teams\u2019 mental wellbeing<\/a> with each revolution.\n<h2 id=\"what-does-self-care-in-the-workplace-look-like\">What does self care in the workplace look like?<\/h2>\nYou might be wondering how you could possibly squeeze in a bubble bath in the middle of the working day, and the reality is that self-care looks different in the workplace. It involves having boundaries, catching onto the signs of stress and prioritising your own mental health.\n\nHere are our favourite self care strategies for the workplace.\n<h3 id=\"create-a-routine-with-set-breaks\">Create a routine with set breaks<\/h3>\nCreating a <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/blog\/getting-back-into-routine\/\">proper work routine<\/a> can help you get in the mindset to conquer your work day. Start each day with a to-do list and your number one priority that you need to complete. Although small, it can help you feel productive, motivated and aware of what needs to get done.\n\nTo create a consistent schedule, we suggest:\n<ul>\n<li>Getting in the routine of waking up at the same time each morning<\/li>\n<li>Having lunch at the same time and ensuring you take it away from your desk space.<\/li>\n<li>Prioritising your physical health \u2013\u00a0get some fresh air and go outside for a walk or hit the gym<\/li>\n<li>Setting a time you want to clock off work for the day (aim for between 5pm and 6pm).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nWhen creating your work routine, it\u2019s important to note that it won&#8217;t be perfect from day one. If you\u2019re pencilling in 5 hours to complete a report, but you know that you have a client meeting and team training during that time, you\u2019re setting yourself up to fail. Not to mention that we often get distracted, bored or hungry. Be kind and generous with your schedule.\n\nPencil in when you\u2019re going to eat lunch, have a coffee break, when you\u2019re going to call your teammate or even when you\u2019re going to check your phone. Gradual changes and taking smaller steps over time consistently will make it easier to reach any goals.\n\nRemember, your routine needs to be one that\u2019s not only practical but also enjoyable. It should fit well with your goals, lifestyle and workload. Which leads us to one of our favourite methods of self care in the workplace\u2026\n<h3 id=\"time-blocking-to-prioritise-your-day\">Time blocking to prioritise your day<\/h3>\nPutting yourself first is the ultimate form of self care, and valuing your own time sits at the top of the list. One way to do that is by using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeblockplanner.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">time blocking<\/a>, which is the concept of breaking down tasks by working hours.\n\nTime blocking is a great way to stay focused and in \u2018deep work\u2019 mode when you\u2019re facing multiple distractions at work. It will also encourage employees to book meetings that fall outside of the tasks you\u2019ve already time blocked in your calendar \u2013\u00a0the best way to get what you need to get done, done!\n\nIf you\u2019re using <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/blog\/remote-working-software\/\">Slack or an instant messaging tool<\/a>, set your status to \u2018deep work\u2019, add your phone number and hit snooze on your notifications. This is a sure-fire way to keep you focused and on track with your work without interruptions.\n<h3 id=\"put-movement-and-hydration-at-the-top-of-your-list\">Put movement and hydration at the top of your list<\/h3>\nFollowing on from the concept of time blocking, it\u2019s important to <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/blog\/physical-exercise-mental-health\/\">dedicate time for movement and exercising<\/a>. The last thing you want at the end of your work day is intense back pain because you\u2019ve <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/blog\/deskercise\/\">forgotten to get up from your desk<\/a> for the past 8 hours. Get up, get moving and get in those steps. We\u2019re sure that 10,000 steps a day helps keep the doctor away \u2013\u00a0and yes, we are 100% in favour of those good ol\u2019 walking meetings!\n\nDaily reminders in your calendar to move, stretch, or to drink a glass of water can help you from feeling chained to your desk. Better yet, purchase a water bottle for your desk and put reminders in your calendar to drink up or refill!\n\nIf you plan on walking for 30 minutes in the morning, put it in your calendar and update your status. You\u2019ll let your team know that you\u2019re away from your desk and spending some time re-energising and refocusing. It will do wonders for your productivity throughout the day, and you\u2019ll sit back down at your desk feeling ready to get to work.\n\nSometimes all we need is a long walk and a good podcast to start practising self care \u2013 and you won\u2019t have to deal with the post-work back pain.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"jog around the office - self care workplace\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6023\" height=\"338\" src=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/jog-around-the-office.gif\" width=\"500\"\/>\n<em>Quick jog around the office, anyone?<\/em>\n<h3 id=\"invest-in-some-new-stationery-or-a-digital-tool\">Invest in some new stationery or a digital tool<\/h3>\nBuying a new planner can inspire you to plan your workday. That\u2019s the <strong><em>opposite<\/em><\/strong> of self care. So why do <a href=\"https:\/\/research.udemy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Udemy-2019-Workplace-Boundaries-Report-20190923.pdf\">59% of managers<\/a> feel pressure to work through their lunch? It\u2019s time to set some boundaries.\n\n<em>Boundaries can be described as guidelines or rules designed to establish safe and reasonable behaviours for an individual and can contribute to positive wellbeing.<\/em>\n\nIn the workplace, it\u2019s your first instinct to help your team when they need you, often pushing your own needs to the side. Use this knowledge as a motivator and also as a chance to relax and breathe.\n\nUse mindfulness time to unwind and take a moment for yourself. Gaining insight into the emotions that influence how you respond to your surroundings is one of the greatest forms of self-care.
