Did you know that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/policy\/economy\/financial-stress-spreads-to-a-third-of-australians-survey-20210312-p57a9w\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a third<\/a> of Australians were under financial stress in 2021? There\u2019s a lot of us in the same boat, yet most of us are looking out to sea.\n\nMoney can be an awkward subject at the best of times, but talking about it at work can be especially tense. No matter how friendly we are with our colleagues, it\u2019s unlikely that we\u2019ll ever feel comfortable discussing our personal finances in detail.\n\nBut does that mean that we should avoid the subject altogether?\n<h2 id=\"why-is-money-such-a-taboo-subject\">Why is money such a taboo subject?<\/h2>\nEven though you might not shout from the rooftops about <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/resources\/wellness-at-work\/\">mental or physical health at work<\/a>, it\u2019s become a lot more socially acceptable (and encouraged, with initiatives like <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/blog\/r-u-ok-day\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">R U OK Day<\/a>) to open the conversation about these topics at work. The same cannot be said for money.\n\nMoney seems simple in theory, it\u2019s a number attached to your bank account. But individual financial associations go much further beyond what you see on a surface level. Your team member may be battling a big debt or supporting someone who is, they may have financial dependents you are not aware of, or they may be saving up for a big ticket item that they do not wish to disclose. All of this can be tied to complicated feelings.\n\n<em>\u201cIt is such a loaded conversation, and there is so much subtext and hidden meaning wrapped up in money,\u201d<\/em> behavioural finance expert Daniel Crosby told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-money-conversation\/the-last-taboo-why-nobody-talks-about-money-idUSBREA2Q1UN20140327\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reuters<\/a>. <em>\u201cMoney is shorthand for happiness, power, and personal efficacy, so it can be very scary. When money is short, it can be seen as a deficiency on the part of the breadwinner.\u201d<\/em>\n\nAs work is the place where we win our bread, the awkward nature of financial conversations is heightened.\n\n<h2 id=\"what-money-topics-shouldnt-we-talk-about-at-work\">What money topics shouldn\u2019t we talk about at work?<\/h2>\nHere are some money topics that HR, managers and leaders should not start conversations about at work.\n<h3 id=\"debt\">Debt<\/h3>\nPersonal debt can be tied up in a lot of feelings of shame. No matter how it was accumulated, it can be an incredible <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/blog\/occupational-stress\/\">source of stress<\/a>. It may be tied to a mortgage, a credit card, a student loan or a personal loan; but whatever the source &#8211; we do not recommend asking your employees questions about their debts.\n\nIn the unlikely event that your employee comes to you to discuss debt, you may wish to provide a kind ear or point them in the direction of helpful resources. Remember, it&#8217;s important to not give any personal advice as you may not completely understand your employee\u2019s situation.\n\nInstead, direct them to the <a href=\"https:\/\/ndh.org.au\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National Debt Helpline<\/a> on 1800 007 007 for free and confidential advice from professional financial counsellors.\n<h3 id=\"personal-savings\">Personal Savings<\/h3>\nRemember that bank account question at the top of this article? The same enquiry should not be made of a person\u2019s savings account.\n\nIt\u2019s not cool to ask a member of your team how much money they have in their savings accounts, the value of their assets or how much their retirement or superannuation is worth. Be mindful of the life stages of the different members of your team. Even a lighthearted question about super could cause stress for an older employee with a small fund.\n\nAgain, there\u2019s no issue in providing a sympathetic ear as a leader &#8211; but we shouldn\u2019t be asking questions unprompted, and we should refrain from giving direct advice.\n<h3 id=\"family-salaries\">Family salaries<\/h3>\nHave you ever heard the saying about assumptions? They make an\u2026 (we\u2019ll let you fill in the blanks).\n\nIt\u2019s not ok to ask or speculate about someone\u2019s family&#8217;s salaries. You never know what someone&#8217;s family financial dynamics might be &#8211; if their partner is earning more or if they come from a wealthy or working class family &#8211; and it\u2019s not really anyone\u2019s business to know these things.\n\nIf a manager is curious about these things, they should keep it to themselves.\n<h3 id=\"cryptocurrency\">Cryptocurrency<\/h3>\nLook &#8211; it\u2019s not that you can\u2019t talk about cryptocurrency at work, it\u2019s just a little bit easy to get carried away with it.
