It can be as simple as collecting as much information as you can from what&#8217;s available in the public domain. Start where all good searches begin&#8230;Google.\n\nThe internet has a <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/blog\/small-business-embrace-digital-transformation\/\">wealth of easily accessible information<\/a> waiting for you to explore.\n\nCheck out your competitor&#8217;s website, sign up for their e-newsletter and set up a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/alerts\">Google Alert<\/a>, so you&#8217;re notified when they&#8217;re mentioned online. The trick is to think like your ideal customer, that way you will see what the market loves about your competitors.\n\nIf they have a physical store, make sure you pay them a visit. Sales strategy<\/h3>\nIt&#8217;s useful to take a look at your competitor&#8217;s sales strategy. That is, what channels do they use to get their products and services into the hands of customers? Why?<\/li>\n<li>What made them choose your product over a competitor? (or vice versa)<\/li>\n<li>Would they recommend your product to a friend? Why or why not?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"3-marketing-strategy\">3. Marketing strategy<\/h3>\nConsider how and where your competitors promote their products or service. The easiest place to start is social media. Follow your competitors on relevant platforms like Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.\n\nTake note of how many followers they have, how often they post and how engaged their followers are.\n\nHave a look at the customer sentiment in the comments, are they raving about their new purchase? or are they making complaints?\n\nYou might also want to investigate other marketing avenues your competitors are using such as:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>A Google MyBusiness Listing<\/strong> &#8211; do they have one, and if so, is it up to date? How many customer reviews do they have? Are they positive or negative?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Local outreach <\/strong>&#8211; do they actively take part in their local community? Perhaps they sponsor a local sports team or have a referral partnership with a nearby business.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Retail windows &#8211;<\/strong> if they have a physical store, what is their signage like? How do they draw the attention of those walking or driving past?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"4-marketing-content\">4. Marketing content<\/h3>\nNow that you know where and how your competitors are promoting their products or services, the next step &#8211; and perhaps the more crucial &#8211; is to look at <em>what<\/em> they&#8217;re saying.\n<ul>\n<li>What customer problem or challenge do they address?<\/li>\n<li>What product benefits do they highlight?<\/li>\n<li>Do they focus on price or quality, or something else?<\/li>\n<li>Can their product do something yours cannot? SWOT analysis<\/h3>\nGathering intelligence is one thing, but to really benefit from all of the information you&#8217;ve got to hand, you&#8217;ll need to organise it in a way that you can use it.
