Back in 2020, the professor of business administration at Texas A&amp;M University saw the trends in the employment sector and predicted a mass movement as a consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic. And what\u2019s more, <em>he speculated that it would last five whole years.\u00a0<\/em>\n\nPoor working conditions. Toxic workplaces. Uncertainty over job security. Lack of career progression opportunities. A reappraisal of personal and professional priorities.\n\nThe time bomb had been ticking for some time, but the pandemic arrived and forced all of these issues to the surface.\n\nWe saw it unfolding in our own survey results. At the time of publishing, job vacancies in the UK were at a record high, and our Employee Movement and Retention Report, revealed that 55% of workers planned to look for a new role in the year ahead.\n\nAnd now here we are.\n\nBetween April and August 2021, 20 million <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/lifestyle\/careers\/whats-driving-americas-workers-to-leave-jobs-in-record-numbers-11634312414\">voluntary resignations<\/a> were handed in in the US. Some are calling it the Great Reset.\n\n<strong><em>But what about the employees who left a job and then want it back?<\/em><\/strong>\n\nLet\u2019s talk about boomerangs.\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt='Gif of woman in pink suit jacket, text reads \"Do I know you?\"' class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7229\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2022\/04\/Do-I-know-you.gif\" width=\"480\"\/>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-a-boomerang-employee\">What is a boomerang employee?<\/h2>\nBoomerangs are designed to come back, right?\n\nIt\u2019s also the name given to an employee who left a job but is seeking to return to it.\n\nThis is a phenomenon that we saw take off in the wake of the pandemic. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/news\/story\/hello-its-your-old-boss-calling-5205836\/\">LinkedIn<\/a>, in 2021 4.5% of new recruits on its platform were boomerangs, up from 3.9% in 2019.\n<h2 id=\"why-would-an-employee-want-to-return-to-a-previous-job\">Why would an employee want to return to a previous job?<\/h2>\nWhether an employee took a new role but changed their mind, or couldn\u2019t find a new job, there are as many reasons why an employee would want to return to their old job as there are boomerang employees.\n\nBut since you asked, we can break it down into some general themes.\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A black and white textboard reads Welcome back!\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7228\" height=\"1706\" src=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2022\/04\/boomerang-employee-welcome-back-1-scaled.jpg\" width=\"2560\"\/>\n<h3 id=\"better-pay\">Better pay<\/h3>\nEmployees might discover that they can negotiate to return to a better salary or better working conditions. The stats show that boomerangs are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/11\/03\/great-resignation-could-fuel-the-rise-of-the-boomerang-employee.html\">better paid than employees who never left<\/a>.\n<h3 id=\"personal-circumstances\">Personal circumstances<\/h3>\nWorkers are tired. They\u2019re stressed. They\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/monitor\/2022\/01\/special-burnout-stress\">more burnt out than ever<\/a>. Some employees left their roles because they just needed a rest. Whether that\u2019s to reevaluate their personal life, their work life balance, for their own mental health and wellbeing, or to look after a loved one, rest and recalibration is absolutely a valid reason to step back from a job. When that worker is feeling recharged, they may feel ready to return to the same job or the same company.\n\nIt could be that the worker started a new role and didn\u2019t enjoy their new duties, their new manager, their team, or the company culture. It\u2019s never appropriate to dig into this, but we all know it happens.\n\nOr perhaps a loyal employee left because of personal reasons which unexpectedly changed, such as a family member moving location and then being able to move back.\n\nAnd we know employers don\u2019t like to hear this, but perhaps the personal reason was that the worker simply didn\u2019t enjoy their job. And then upon leaving, the worker may have had an epiphany that maybe it wasn\u2019t so bad after all.\n<h3 id=\"technology-and-digital-transformation\">Technology and digital transformation<\/h3>\nAlmost overnight, technology has enabled roles that were traditionally never considered remote to become remote. If an employee left a role because they wanted to relocate but their job was not previously supported in a remote setting, and technology can now support it, an employee may well feel inspired to return.\n\nIndeed, the remote-work genie is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/worklife\/article\/20210615-is-the-great-digital-nomad-workforce-actually-coming\">out of the bottle<\/a>. Digital nomadism comes in many shapes and forms, and now that many workplaces have put the infrastructure in place, employers are able to offer the flexibility that many workers are looking for to support their desired lifestyle. In these cases, a former employee could very well be tempted to return to an old employer if the cultural transformation addressed issues that were part of their reason for leaving.\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt='Baga Chipz saying \"much better\"' class=\"size-full wp-image-7227\" height=\"270\" src=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2022\/04\/much-better.gif\" width=\"480\"\/>\n\n\u00a0\n<h2 id=\"should-an-employer-rehire-a-former-worker\">Should an employer rehire a former worker?<\/h2>\nEach and any decision to hire or rehire is entirely down to the company and the applicant, and their individual circumstances.\n\nBut if you\u2019re worried about whether to take a former employee back just on principle, do consider this research carried out by <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.aom.org\/doi\/10.5465\/amj.2019.1340\">Cornell University<\/a>, which revealed that returning employees are <em>\u201calmost always higher performers than their peers\u201d<\/em>.\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt='Jimmy Fallon and guest, text reads \"Good to have you back\"' class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7226\" height=\"270\" src=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/my\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2022\/04\/ezgif.com-gif-maker-4-1.gif\" width=\"480\"\/>\n<h2 id=\"the-benefits-for-employers\">The benefits for employers<\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"\"><\/h3>\n<h3 id=\"boomerangs-outperform-new-hires\">Boomerangs outperform new hires<\/h3>\nCornell\u2019s study compared the post-hire performance of 2,053 boomerang or returning employees and 10,858 new hires over an eight-year period in a large health care organisation. The results showed that the returning employees outperformed the new hires, especially in roles requiring \u201chigh levels of administrative coordination.\u201d\n\nAs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/allbusiness\/2021\/12\/18\/should-your-business-rehire-boomerang-employees-who-want-their-jobs-back\/\">Forbes<\/a> points out, returning employees have a familiarity with their role and their previous company, as well as valuable insights gained from their experience elsewhere, often working for rival organisations. This gives them a competitive edge over new hires who need to pick up skills and specialisations for their role which take some time to learn.\n<h3 id=\"time-and-cost-savings\">Time and cost savings<\/h3>\nThus re-hires require less training and less inducting which can save businesses significant time and money. As they already know the job and the team, they are also less of a risk than a new hire.\n<h3 id=\"soft-skills-value-add\">Soft skills value add<\/h3>\nIt\u2019s not just experience within a rival firm which is valuable to an employer when rehiring a former employee. Boomerangs often return with greater confidence and a more rounded skill set than had they stayed in their original role.\n\nFrom dealing with managers to collaborating with colleagues, boomerangs bring their newly gained experience with them and tend to return afresh with useful insights and skills that can benefit the whole organisation.\n<h2 id=\"technical-hires\">Technical hires<\/h2>\nTechnical vacancies can be hard to fill. But be aware of penalising loyalty by paying boomerangs more than your current workers.
