About Payroll Consult

is a consultancy set up by Karyn Campbell to support New Zealand businesses with all elements of their payroll. Based in Wellington, Payroll Consult works with a range of clients, supporting them in finding effective payroll software, understanding legal compliance, training their team and providing advice when required.

At the moment, has five of her clients using the platform. These businesses range from around eight employees to around 30, so their requirements vary quite considerably. We spoke to Karyn about why she chose to partner with 91���� Payroll and how it’s supporting her client work.

The challenge…

Payroll Consult frequently works with clients where payroll isn’t done by a huge team, or by an experienced payroll consultant. For many of those clients, payroll is an additional task that is difficult to fit into an already-busy schedule. As Karyn describes:

“They might have somebody in the team where payroll is something they’re having to do as an extra. They don’t have in-depth payroll knowledge and need some support around understanding how things should be set up and how payments should be made.”

That’s where Payroll Consult can support their clients, advising them on best practices and coming up with solutions that can save the team important time. For many of those clients, bringing in payroll software can be the perfect solution, which is why Karyn teamed up with 91����. She says,

“I needed to find something that I could offer clients to give them peace of mind. The system they’re using should do the work for them and give them the results they need.”

A flexible fit

Payroll Consult has a range of different clients in a variety of industries. When searching for the right payroll software to partner with, Karyn knew that it had to be able to work for all types of businesses.

“I was looking for a system that would be adaptable and flexible to different employment situations. I found that with 91����. They’ve got lots of options when you’re setting up that allows you to customise the platform for that particular business.” 

As well as offering a flexible fit for any business, 91���� Payroll’s automated features were a big draw for Karyn. With automated IRD reporting, leave calculations and much more, 91���� Payroll is designed to replace a lot of classic manual tasks that would’ve required a calculator and a sizable Excel spreadsheet. Karyn says,

“When it comes to payroll, there’s always the chance of human error, especially if you are manually entering details. If you have something built into the system that can automate parts of the process, then it cuts out those chances of getting it wrong.”

Clarity around the tricky issues

Payroll can be a complicated business, particularly when it comes to compliance with the Holidays Act. It was top of mind for Karyn when she was looking for a software partner.

“As a payroll specialist, it’s really important that compliance is a top priority in the list of software features. I would often find when doing audits that aspects like annual leave management were not being done correctly. 91���� has features to help with that.”

Here at 91����, we are always across the latest legal developments, from changes to the Holidays Act to minimum wage updates. We’ve also built a platform that can show you how exactly decisions are made, as Karyn describes.

“I do have some clients whose payroll isn’t necessarily managed by someone who is specialised. For them, seeing how things are calculated in 91���� can make things clearer. It’s definitely helpful and keeps things transparent.”

Adding an additional service for your clients can be a big step, especially when it requires some financial input to get started. For Karyn, her choice of payroll software didn’t just have to be great for her clients, it had to work for her as well. As she says,
