鈥淲e pride ourselves on being a family-run business,鈥 explained Olivia. 鈥淏ecause of that, we want to have a level of engagement with our employees. Step Fwd IT鈥檚 team uses the Employee Happiness Score to communicate how they鈥檙e feeling at work. The Happiness Score asks employees to anonymously rate their happiness at work on a scale of 1 from 10. They can also add comments to explain their score further. Employers can then continue the conversation if they need more details or want to identify next steps. Because they remain anonymous, employees feel more comfortable to be honest about their experiences. It鈥檚 human nature to steer away from difficult conversations. The Employee Happiness Score circumvents that discomfort.
鈥淚t鈥檚 been invaluable for our people,鈥 said Olivia. 鈥淲e鈥檙e an IT business so there are lots of introverts. It鈥檚 a nice way for them to let them know how they鈥檙e going, whether it鈥檚 positive or negative. I鈥檓 not expecting everyone to write a comment on why they鈥檙e feeling good. But if they鈥檙e below a 4, tell us so we can do something about it.鈥

鈥淲e used to catch up once a year in a traditional review,鈥 said Chris. 鈥淵ou鈥檇 say 鈥極k, let鈥檚 pull out the folder and see what was done and what wasn鈥檛.鈥 Having that weekly, fortnightly and monthly catch up gives us much better visibility on how everyone is tracking.鈥
