It\u2019s the first movement since October and the first uptick since April 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">The unanimous decision comes as the Board continues attempts to bring inflation under control while also protecting green shoots in the recovering economic landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">\u201cWe do think that a 25 basis point hike is a well-balanced approach both to bring inflation back down but also still provide stimulus for growth going forward,\u201c says Reserve Bank Governor Anna Breman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">The Board has flagged further rate rises are on the cards, putting more pressure on small business budgets.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-light-violet-400-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-cbaa921fa2edb023963bd4637483a534 has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why The RBNZ Opted For An Interest Rate Increase<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-4 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">The official cash rate is the Reserve Bank&#8217;s main tool for keeping inflation in the target 1-3 per cent band, although it is generally regarded as a blunt instrument that needs to be wielded delicately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">A key factor in the Board&#8217;s balancing-act decision has been the ceasefire in the Middle East, after the Iran conflict drove up energy prices and <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/nz\/news\/nz-fuel-prices-rise-sme-costs\/\">inflation<\/a> earlier this year. The partial reopening of the Strait of Hormuz has caused global oil prices to fall markedly, easing pressure on households and businesses, but the Bank expects the effects of the shock to linger for some time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">\u201cThe inflation outlook has improved since May, however the Committee remains focused on ensuring that recent cost increases do not become embedded in wage and price-setting behavior,\u201d says Governor Breman.<br><br>The RBNZ believes inflation has peaked at 3.9 per cent in the June quarter and is now on its way down, forecasting the CPI will return to 2 per cent by mid-next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">This would be welcome news to small and medium business owners. \u201cHigh inflation erodes purchasing power so for households to feel like they can consume again and invest, we need to get inflation back down,\u201d Governor Breman says. \u201cThat would also increase demand in the sectors that have been struggling.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-light-violet-400-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-68fad5684efa42964608ba297ad63636\">The Economy Can Now Restart Its Recovery<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-5 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">New Zealand&#8217;s economy was recovering from recession before the Middle East conflict stalled its trajectory, and the easing of the crisis means that recovery can resume. The RBNZ projects domestic growth during the September quarter, which is underway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">\u201cThe strength in the New Zealand economy is gaining momentum. We&#8217;re seeing it rebounding now as oil prices are falling,\u201d says Governor Breman.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">This is backed up by ANZ\u2019s latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anz.co.nz\/content\/dam\/anzconz\/documents\/economics-and-market-research\/2026\/ANZ-BusinessOutlook-20260630.pdf\">Business Outlook, <\/a>which reports confidence had started improving even before oil prices began to drop. \u201cWhile times remain uncertain, firms appear to be more optimistic about what lies ahead, and generally more willing to invest and employ,\u201d the ANZ\u2019s economists write. \u201cWhile headwinds persist, this month\u2019s survey offers hope that firms and the broader economy can to some extent pick up where they left off before the oil price spike.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">The Governor notes that inflation returning to 2 per cent would not only improve economic growth, it may also strengthen the<a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/nz\/news\/nz-small-businesses-hiring-economic-headwinds\/\"> labour market<\/a>, since <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/nz\/news\/nz-unemployment-5-3-percent-middle-east-conflict-threatens-recovery\/\">unemployment<\/a> remains high by recent standards.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">In the meantime, the lower New Zealand dollar keeps exports competitive in an improving global economy, and provides a potential boost for businesses in agriculture, tourism, and manufacturing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-light-violet-400-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-666197b3b77296de1468aa58daa7c6f4\">Businesses Play A Role In Keeping Inflation At Bay<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-6 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">The Reserve Bank is watching the global economy closely, observing that while improvements could benefit New Zealand, a flare-up of the Middle East conflict would inevitably reignite inflation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">There are other variables, including the potential impact of El Ni\u00f1o on agriculture and, significantly, the role of businesses in price-setting.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">\u201cIt\u2019s a challenging environment for firms,\u201d acknowledges RBNZ Chief Economist Paul Conway. \u201cDemand conditions are restricting the ability of businesses to pass on costs.\u201d Yet many have eroded their capacity to absorb higher costs.
