As of last week, our borders opened up to visitors and workers from a number of countries and will shortly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/covid-19-omicron-outbreak-jacinda-ardern-confirms-new-zealands-borders-fully-reopen-from-july-31\/XF6OWFMGGLRGXTENVOSRQKGV5U\/\">open up to everyone at the end of July<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s an exciting time \u2013 not only can we reconnect with loved ones but businesses will find it far easier to operate internationally. With <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/nz\/blog\/nz-skills-shortage\/\">an active skills shortage in the country<\/a>, it\u2019s also a golden opportunity to bring a wealth of talent from overseas to join companies here in New Zealand. For businesses, this is a two-sided coin \u2013 they\u2019ll lose workers to overseas opportunities and adventures, but they can also gain employees through skilled migration into New Zealand. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Change is in the air everywhere &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/nz\/resources\/hr-trends\/\">41% of employees worldwide plan to leave their jobs this year<\/a>. The market has also changed, with specific skills gaps growing wider across the world. For example, across the Tasman in Australia, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/policy\/economy\/businesses-shackled-by-shortages-everywhere-20220203-p59thu\">85% of businesses are reporting skills shortages are affecting their capacity to operate<\/a>. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newshub.co.nz\/home\/politics\/2022\/04\/critical-staff-shortages-record-employment-and-huge-demands-for-goods-highlight-need-for-immigrant-workers-business-nz-report.html\">recent Business NZ report <\/a>showed we\u2019re experiencing similar shortages, with at least 10,000 extra staff needed in the Canterbury region alone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a global problem, it\u2019s becoming increasingly unlikely that many companies will be able to meet their talent demands in their own backyard. Making it more challenging, Immigration New Zealand has tightened immigration policies in recent years, asking for higher salaries and a labour market test by employers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Immigration New Zealand recently announced new changes in the form of the new Accredited Employer Work Visa from 4 July 2022, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.odt.co.nz\/opinion\/new-work-visa-places-onus-employer-follow-rules\">puts more pressure on employers, rather than their prospective employees<\/a>. Previously, the person wishing to work for a company overseas would largely be responsible for applying for a visa \u2013 now, it\u2019s down to employers to comply. The steps include accreditation and a job test, although <a href=\"https:\/\/www.immigration.govt.nz\/new-zealand-visas\/apply-for-a-visa\/tools-and-information\/work-and-employment\/green-list-occupations\">some roles are exempt<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless, if international talent is what you\u2019re looking for, then going through those steps is essential. Would they be based near the coast, with windswept beaches and a laid back atmosphere? For potential migrants with families, how are the local schools in the area?
