The cluster is also known in other parts of the world as the Pleiades, the Seven Sisters, Makli\u2019i or Subaru.\n\nWhen the Matariki star cluster becomes visible to New Zealand in mid-winter, it marks the start of the M\u0101ori Lunar Calendar. Credit: Wikimedia Commons<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 id=\"\"><\/h2>\n<h2 id=\"is-matariki-a-public-holiday\">Is Matariki a public holiday?<\/h2>\nYes &#8211; it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mbie.govt.nz\/business-and-employment\/employment-and-skills\/employment-legislation-reviews\/matariki\/matariki-public-holiday\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">officially made a public holiday<\/a> with the passing of the Te K\u0101hui o Matariki Public Holiday Bill on 12 April 2022. While Matariki has been celebrated for a very long time amongst M\u0101ori iwi and wh\u0101nau, this was the first time it had been formally marked as a national public holiday in Aotearoa.\n\nTo recognise Matariki as the first national holiday specifically celebrating m\u0101tauranga M\u0101ori, the legislation was drafted in both te reo M\u0101ori and English.\n\nThe 2024 Matariki national public holiday will be on <strong>28th June 2024<\/strong>. It&#8217;s not the same date each year, but varies with the M\u0101ori lunar calendar. Generally this falls between June and July each year. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beehive.govt.nz\/release\/matariki-holiday-dates-next-thirty-years-announced\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">You can see the full list of dates up until 2052 here<\/a>.\n<h2 id=\"how-is-matariki-celebrated\">How is Matariki celebrated?<\/h2>\nEvery iwi marks Matariki differently, although everything is underpinned by those three principles of remembrance, celebration and looking to the future. Generally it\u2019s a time to get together with loved ones, whether that\u2019s sharing kai, telling stories of wh\u0101nau who have passed away, or having a k\u014drero about plans for the year ahead.\n\nThere are also plans for events across Aotearoa, including a <a href=\"https:\/\/matarikinz.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">weekend event in the Bay of Islands<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/newsline.ccc.govt.nz\/news\/story\/tirama-mai-returns-to-light-up-winter\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">festival of lights in Christchurch<\/a>.\n<h2 id=\"who-are-the-matariki-advisory-group\">Who are the Matariki Advisory Group?<\/h2>\nThe Matariki Advisory Group are a number of experts in Te Ao M\u0101ori brought together by the Government. The group was formed during the consultation around the Matariki Public Holiday Bill, and provided advice to Ministers in May 2021 around dates for the holiday, ways to celebrate and what is required to improve understanding of Matariki.\n\nThe members of the group are Dr Rangi\u0101nehu Matamua, Hoturoa Barclay-Kerr, Rereata Makiha, Victoria Campbell, Dr Pauline Harris, Dr Ruakere Hond and Jack Thatcher. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mbie.govt.nz\/assets\/values-for-matariki-celebrations-matariki-advisory-group.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">You can read their recommendations here<\/a>.\n<h2 id=\"how-to-celebrate-matariki-at-work\">How to celebrate Matariki at work<\/h2>\nFirst and foremost, employers will need to ensure they factor in the Matariki holiday as they would any public holiday. This includes giving employees a paid day off if it\u2019s an otherwise working day, so <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/nz\/blog\/leave-management-guide\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">make sure you\u2019ve got your leave management process in place<\/a>.
