Slack channels buzzed into life. Beyonc\u00e9 became the new champion for the <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/blog\/anti-work-movement\/\">anti-work<\/a> and Great Resignation movements.\n\nIn a nutshell, one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@zaidleppelin\/video\/7124414185282391342?is_from_webapp=v1&amp;item_id=7124414185282391342&amp;lang=en\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">TikTok post<\/a> single handedly changed the conversation, and folks decided it was high time for some boundaries in the workplace. The post gently but firmly stated this is not about quitting your job \u2013 it\u2019s about quitting all the \u2018extras\u2019, going above and beyond your pay grade. And it very quickly became an internet sensation.\n\n<em>\u201cYou\u2019re not outright quitting your job, but you\u2019re quitting the idea of going above and beyond,\u201d <\/em>creator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@zaidleppelin?lang=en\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">zaidleppelin<\/a> explained in the video.<em> \u201cYou\u2019re still performing your duties, but you\u2019re no longer subscribing to the hustle-culture mentality that work has to be your life; the reality is it\u2019s not, and your worth as a person is not defined by your labour.\u201d<\/em>\n\n<blockquote class=\"tiktok-embed\" cite=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@zaidleppelin\/video\/7124414185282391342\" data-video-id=\"7124414185282391342\" data-embed-from=\"oembed\" style=\"max-width:605px; min-width:325px;\"> <section> <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"@zaidleppelin\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@zaidleppelin?refer=embed\">@zaidleppelin<\/a> <p>On quiet quitting <a title=\"workreform\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/tag\/workreform?refer=embed\">#workreform<\/a><\/p> <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"\u266c i thought you wanted to dance - ruby\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/music\/i-thought-you-wanted-to-dance-7100035425913391915?refer=embed\">\u266c i thought you wanted to dance &#8211; ruby<\/a> <\/section> <\/blockquote> <script async src=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/embed.js\"><\/script>\n<h2 id=\"a-rejection-of-hustle-culture\">A rejection of hustle culture<\/h2>\nBut why the fuss? Why is \u2018just doing what you\u2019re paid to do\u2019 so controversial? Why should workers act \u2018more than their wage\u2019?\n\nWe\u2019ve lived in the golden age of hustle culture for a long time now. We\u2019ve <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/nz\/blog\/toxic-productivity-at-work\/\">glorified the \u2018hard workers\u2019,<\/a> the people that go above and beyond in service to their colleagues, teams and companies. This is what we have been taught is <em>necessary to succeed<\/em>.\n\nSo for those with a work ethic that is based on (or glorifies) the hustle \u2013 the insubordination of quiet quitting might come as a shock. For those that expect, <em>nay demand<\/em>, unpaid overtime from their burnt out, overworked employees, yes \u2013 quiet quitting might seem disloyal, disruptive and defiant.\n\nBut let\u2019s just remember that quiet quitting is quite literally <em>just doing your job. <\/em>It\u2019s about not taking on any additional (unpaid) work. It\u2019s about setting boundaries \u2013 not treachery.\n\nHarmless, right? <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/blog\/boundaries-at-work\/\">Boundaries at work<\/a> have been long overdue.\n\nOf course, work culture varies from country to country and company to company. Some have notoriously gruelling work ethics, which is why one Japanese company developed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesnownews.com\/viral\/japanese-company-develops-nap-boxes-for-office-workers-so-they-can-have-a-quick-standing-sleep-during-shifts-article-92973194\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;nap boxes<\/a>&#8216; for office workers so they can have a quick standing sleep during shifts.\n\nIn other places, there is growing recognition that work-life balance and the working week needs a rethink. That\u2019s why 85% of Iceland\u2019s workforce now have the right to work <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-10-14\/the-shorter-work-week-really-worked-in-iceland-here-s-how\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">four days a week<\/a>.\n\nHustle culture is on the way out \u2013 even if Kim Kardashian thinks it\u2019s what her success is down to and everyone should wholeheartedly embrace (KK did apologise for lashing out, eventually, saying her words were taken <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/kim-kardashian-apologises-for-her-viral-get-up-and-work-advice-to-women-in-business-12577261\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">out of context<\/a>).\n\nBut the real reason quiet quitting gets people\u2019s backs up is because it sounds very much like the age-old refrain<em> \u201cno one wants to work anymore\u201d. <\/em>\n\nIndeed, this has been a common complaint from titans of industry through history. As University of Calgary professor and researcher Paul Fairie points out, it\u2019s a claim that\u2019s been uttered in the media at least once a decade, every decade, for the past century \u2014 going as far back as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/nobody-wants-to-work-anymore-has-been-said-for-100-years-it-wasnt-true-then-and-it-isnt-true-now-11659019444\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">1894<\/a>.\n\nIn fact, people do want to work \u2013 just not for low pay and unreasonable conditions. The conversation is rightly in the headlines though because it recognises that our work-life situation is actually nowhere near the \u2018balance\u2019 that we need \u2013 not because <em>we don\u2019t want to work anymore.\u00a0<\/em>\n\nQuiet quitting is simply a pushback on being expected to work extra, or in poor conditions \u2013 long hours, for little or no pay. It\u2019s not about being a slacker or doing the bare minimum. It\u2019s not even about not doing your job well, giving up your career plan or leaving your ambition at the door.\n\nWe\u2019ll say it one more time for the people at the back. This is about boundaries. It\u2019s about employee wellbeing. It\u2019s about creating a great workplace culture. It\u2019s 2022, right? We can do this.\n\nBut there\u2019s something lurking back there that does deserve a mention and a cold hard look at. While the debate around quiet quitting rages on, why is nobody talking about <strong>quiet firing<\/strong>?\n<h2 id=\"what-is-quiet-firing\">What is quiet firing?<\/h2>\nQuiet firing is an insidious practice whereby the employer cultivates conditions that passively encourage employees to resign.\n\nThis behaviour is on a spectrum which can cover anything from constructive dismissal to overlooking employees for promotion, and everything in between \u2013 some casual workplace neglect or career stagnation.\n\nThe outcome is the same: the employee eventually leaves because they feel they\u2019re at a dead end. Which neatly avoids the situation where the employer outright fires them. Ouch.\n\nTruth be told, a lot of this falls on the shoulders of the line manager, and the unfortunate truth is that poor management can lead to high levels of staff distrust and turnover. In the era of the Great Reset, this is not an experience you want for your business.\n\nIt\u2019s worth remembering that these behaviours can be intentional as well as unintentional. Which begs the question, could you be engaging in quiet firing by accident?\n<h2 id=\"signs-of-quiet-firing\">Signs of quiet firing<\/h2>\nHere are some telltales to watch out for:\n<ul>\n<li>Not giving pay rises (for years)<\/li>\n<li>Unfair\/inequitable bonus allocation<\/li>\n<li>Not giving feedback<\/li>\n<li>Not giving opportunities for promotion<\/li>\n<li>Not giving opportunities for learning, training or development<\/li>\n<li>Not listening<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nMaybe you have some wallflower employees that are just quietly getting on with their job, not actively seeking opportunities for career progression or taking on additional responsibilities.\n\nAs an employer, you didn\u2019t intentionally force them out of the door. Sure, maybe you didn\u2019t appreciate them while they worked for you. But you got them a nice gift when they left, right?\n\nBut this is what quiet firing is all about \u2013 it\u2019s just a bit more sinister when it\u2019s an <em>intentional strategy<\/em>.\n\nThat\u2019s why it\u2019s good to at least be having this conversation. You can\u2019t fix a problem you can\u2019t see. An organisation with a standout company culture is bound to be known as a great place to work in their industry, creating a workplace that top-tier candidates just can\u2019t say no to.\n\nLooking after your employees (as opposed to quietly firing them, say) can help you stand out against your competition. After all, the biggest challenge facing most businesses today is not having enough skilled staff. So make sure you\u2019re doing everything you can to look after your employees \u2013 in turn that will help you retain talent, and attract more of it. Are you attracting top talent, or is it sneaking quietly out the back door?
