href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/election-date-or-reshuffle-pm-jacinda-ardern-to-make-first-announcement-of-election-year\/K5N4VW477RF2JB3CGAZBXSNBBU\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced her resignation<\/a>.\n\nThis news will likely come as a surprise to many \u2013 in the same speech, she confirmed the upcoming General Election date as 14 October 2023. Her time as prime minister was just months away from reaching a full six-year tenure.\n\nArdern explained her resignation, saying that <em>\u201cI no longer have enough in the tank to do [the role] justice\u2019, and that \u2018there are others around me who do.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>\n\nThe next Labour leader &#8211; and New Zealand Prime Minister for at least the next ten months &#8211; will be voted on by Labour party members on 22 January. The replacement is expected to be in place no later than 7 February.\n<h2>A recap on Ardern\u2019s premiership<\/h2>\nTo say that Prime Minister Ardern has had a challenging time in office is putting it mildly. Her Government has been met with a domestic terror attack, a volcanic eruption, a global pandemic and economic challenges.\n\nArdern\u2019s record when it comes to business may take a while to truly understand. Back in 2019, her Government was the first to introduce the concept of a \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/nz\/blog\/wellbeing-budget\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wellbeing Budget\u2019<\/a>, which sought to put people, not numbers, at the centre of their financial allocations.\n\nThen, when the pandemic hit, her health-first approach received <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/commentisfree\/2022\/apr\/05\/new-zealands-covid-strategy-was-one-of-the-worlds-most-successful-what-can-it-learn-from-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reverent praise from media<\/a> around the world. However, it did mean some sacrifices and big ones \u2013 business leaders and workers were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/453241\/lockdown-extensions-causing-economic-carnage-businesses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">polarised<\/a> by intense lockdowns and closed borders.\n\nRecent big steps by Ardern\u2019s Government when it comes to employment have included the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.employment.govt.nz\/about\/news-and-updates\/fair-pay-agreements-bill-passes-into-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fair Pay Agreements<\/a>, as well as the long awaited review of <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/nz\/resources\/whats-coming-next-for-the-holidays-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Holidays Act<\/a>. The final amendments to the Act are still in development.\n\nWhile there have been some strides in business that some have seen as positive, Ardern\u2019s critics in the business community have often pointed to the last few years during the pandemic. The frequent changes in Covid-19 alert levels and rules caused <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newshub.co.nz\/home\/politics\/2022\/04\/support-for-prime-minister-jacinda-ardern-among-small-businesses-drops-15-points-as-national-s-christopher-luxon-soars.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">consternation amongst some small business owners<\/a> and many perceived a lack of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/covid-19-coronavirus-kirk-hope-small-business-may-need-more-support-to-survive\/GGFZGYRLUOOLXQMGG5SNZY6QK4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sector-specific support<\/a>, particularly for the badly hit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tourismticker.com\/2022\/12\/09\/dire-summer-worker-shortage-at-34k-and-counting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hospitality and retail sectors<\/a>.\n\nIn the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/mood-of-the-boardroom-more-than-100-chief-executives-rate-government-ministers\/US7ASFYG5XKGUX5FSUYG66LZMA\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2022 Mood of the Boardroom<\/a>, an annual survey of more than 100 chief executives in New Zealand, Ardern was rated just 1.61\/5 for building confidence within the business community.\n\nNow, as the economy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/the-front-page-recession-mortgage-shock-house-prices-how-bad-will-2023-economic-storm-be\/SEPB6I57XFDGNB7U3QH66PUBZM\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">continues to struggle<\/a> along with the rest of the world, the next few months of New Zealand\u2019s economic recovery remain uncertain.\n<h2>How Jacinda Arden\u2019s resignation happened<\/h2>\nOne <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/political\/482729\/jacinda-ardern-resigns-reactions-from-around-the-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quick glance at the headlines<\/a> from news outlets across the world will tell you one thing about this resignation \u2013 it really was a surprise.\n\nWith Ardern in the home stretch until the election, focus was on how her party would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/national\/politics\/130777430\/the-year-ahead-labour-party-to-shore-up-its-position-for-the-2023-election\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">perform in the upcoming polls<\/a>. There wasn\u2019t any expectation that the leadership of the party itself would change, nor any hints beforehand from journalists with good sources.\n\nArdern\u2019s resignation was a personal one, as she explained:\n\n<em>\u201cI believe that leading a country is the most privileged job anyone could ever have, but also one of the more challenging. You cannot, and should not do it unless you have a full tank, plus, a bit in reserve for those unexpected challenges.<\/em>\n\n<em>\u2018This summer, I had hoped to find a way to prepare for not just another year, but another term \u2013 because that is what this year requires. I have not been able to do that.\u201d<\/em>\n<h2>What leaders can learn from Ardern\u2019s shock departure<\/h2>\nInterestingly, Ardern\u2019s phrasing around \u2018<em>nothing left in the tank\u2019<\/em> is very similar to the wording used by previous Prime Minister John Key in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beehive.govt.nz\/speech\/prime-minister-john-key-announces-resignation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">his resignation speech<\/a>, back in 2016. He too left prior to the election, with a similar reason that he had nothing more to give to the demanding role of Prime Minister.\n\nArdern\u2019s message of recognising your limits when you reach them is one that many leaders can likely relate to. The responsibility that comes with a leadership role makes you accountable to others and to yourself. It requires you to be strong, even when you don&#8217;t feel like it, and decisive, even when you can\u2019t predict the final outcome.\n\nIt can take its toll.\n\nAs Ardern mentioned in her speech,\n\n<em>\u2018The only interesting angle you will find is that after going on six years of some big challenges, that I am human. [&#8230;] We give all that we can, for as long as we can, and then it\u2019s time.\u2019<\/em>\n\nUnderstanding that you\u2019ve reached your limit and you need your situation to change is something that managers have to face at work. Whether that\u2019s finding ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/nz\/blog\/signs-that-you-are-suffering-burnout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cope with burnout<\/a> or switching to a <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/nz\/blog\/flexible-work-arrangements-best-practices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flexible working schedule<\/a> (likely a little less challenging when you\u2019re not Prime Minister!), it\u2019s important to take care of yourself.\n\nOur <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/nz\/resources\/wellness-at-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Wellness at Work report<\/a> found that 58% of employees surveyed had experienced burnout and chronic stress, which can have a huge impact on their health and their work.\n\nRecognising when things are getting tough is important. Ardern has already said that her last day will be no later than 7 February 2023, and the vote for her successor is imminent.\n\nSo far, no clear frontrunners have emerged, but we can expect to see Labour MPs throw their hats in the ring soon. Despite running for leadership back in 2014, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Grant Robertson, has already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1news.co.nz\/2023\/01\/19\/grant-robertson-says-he-will-not-stand-for-labour-leadership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ruled himself out of the race<\/a>.\n\nWhoever takes on the role has a lot to do in just ten months, continuing the Government while preparing for a General Election.
