reach full parity where the global gender pay gap is fully closed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps unsurprisingly, no country has yet to achieve full gender parity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So if you\u2019re questioning why progress is terrifyingly slow for something that has been around for decades, you\u2019re not wrong to. But it\u2019s not that nothing is being done. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seeds are being planted through strong campaigns drumming up awareness, and educating people who have otherwise seen the movement as nothing but a feminist myth. Cries for help to close the gap are getting louder. Governments are putting in effort to introduce pay transparency, in a bid to get employers to address the pay gap practically. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, global statistics prove that the gap has stagnated in recent years and that there is still room for improvement. It\u2019s so dire that the United Nations has declared that the world is not on track to achieve gender equality by 2030. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what can you do as a business to help close the gender pay gap? Why is it important for you to address it when you have business as usual tasks to get on with? From establishing women\u2019s right to work, to the ongoing fight for equal pay, it&#8217;s been a long, hard battle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it doesn\u2019t stop some people from dismissing it as a complete myth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/apr\/05\/gender-pay-gap-figures-debunking-the-myths\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Guardian<\/a>, a small, but vocal coalition of rightwing think tanks and men\u2019s rights activists (the list goes on) view the gender pay gap as a <em>\u201clie perpetuated by feminists who use statistics dishonestly to further their cause.\u201d\u00a0<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thankfully, outside these groups, most folks understand that the gender pay gap is a very real thing that needs to be addressed. One of the better definitions out there is Gartner\u2019s. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/en\/human-resources\/glossary\/gender-pay-gap#:~:text=The%20gender%20pay%20gap%20is,in%20age%2C%20occupation%20and%20location.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gartner defines the gender pay gap<\/a> as <em>\u201cthe average difference in earnings between men and women,\u201d <\/em>and as for why it\u2019s classified as an actual pay gap: <em>\u201cdata shows that women consistently earn less than men even after controlling for differences in age, occupation and location.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/pexels-karolina-grabowska-5900181-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"The gender pay gap is not a myth. \" class=\"wp-image-29584\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-is-the-state-of-the-gender-pay-gap-globally-in-2023\">What is the state of the gender pay gap globally in 2023?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\nWe don\u2019t have to go far to see how poorly things are going. The following statistics are just the tip of the iceberg.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>In Australia<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairwork.gov.au\/pay-and-wages\/pay-secrecy#:~:text=From%207%20June%202023%2C%20pay,in%20them%20could%20face%20penalties.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pay secrecy has only just been repealed<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>In the UK<\/strong>: a campaign is on the way to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peoplemanagement.co.uk\/article\/1809812\/campaign-salary-transparency-legal-right-launches\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">make salary transparency a legal right<\/a>, because the median pay gap between men and women <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/money-mentor\/article\/gender-pay-gap-uk-2023-how-to-check-your-employer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has remained at 9.4% since 2017<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>In New Zealand<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindthegap.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mind The Gap<\/a> is a pay gap registry founded by a philanthropic foundation, that shows whether or not a business has published their gender pay gap information.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>In Singapore:<\/strong> a campaign was designed urging people to donate their gender pay gap, to create more awareness in an effort to appeal to people who still seem to think gender pay gap is a myth despite <a href=\"https:\/\/stats.mom.gov.sg\/Pages\/Update-on-Singapores-Adjusted-Gender-Pay-Gap.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports on Singapore\u2019s gender pay gap being very real<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>In Malaysia:<\/strong> the pay gap means that <a href=\"https:\/\/malaysia.news.yahoo.com\/gender-pay-gap-women-work-free-two-months-year-000147724.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">women work for free nearly two months<\/a> of the year compared to the average man in employment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Screenshot-2023-05-11-at-16.30.27.png\" alt=\"Some statistics showing women in managerial positions in 2015 and 2020.\" class=\"wp-image-29583\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Image Credit: Chapter 5 of the United Nations\u2019s <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/unstats.un.org\/sdgs\/report\/2022\/The-Sustainable-Development-Goals-Report-2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Sustainable Development Goals Report<\/em><\/a><em>. Under Goal 5, Gender equality.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">As if those statistics didn\u2019t paint a dark enough picture, the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/development-agenda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sustainable Development Agenda<\/a> by the United Nations echoes a stark but united sentiment. They\u2019ve announced that \u201c<em>the world is not on track to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls,\u201d<\/em> and progress on gender equality has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\/news-stories\/in-focus\/2022\/08\/in-focus-sustainable-development-goal-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>\u201cnot only failed to move forward, but has begun to reverse.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">What\u2019s clear is women\u2019s representation in positions of power and decision-making remains below parity. Which means workplaces can do better. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Deep breaths everyone. We\u2019ve got lots of work to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/pexels-kindel-media-7651743-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Let's take a look into what's standing in the way of closing the gender pay gap.\" class=\"wp-image-29582\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-elements-are-standing-in-the-way-of-closing-the-gender-pay-gap\">What elements are standing in the way of closing the gender pay gap?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the United Nations, the <a href=\"https:\/\/unstats.un.org\/sdgs\/report\/2022\/The-Sustainable-Development-Goals-Report-2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social and economic fallout<\/a> from the pandemic has influenced the lack of progress in the closing of the gender pay gap. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On top of that, a lack of reporting in this area is also cited, as they found that less than half of the data required to monitor their goal to close the gender pay gap by 2030 is available. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In workplaces, they believe that not enough is being done to accelerate progress on women\u2019s representation in decision-making positions, as well as the establishment of more laws, policies, budgets and institutions that advance gender equality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-are-the-impacts-of-the-gender-pay-gap\">What are the impacts of the gender pay gap?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The direct social and economic impacts on women created by the gender pay gap are intimidating. And very real. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s acknowledged by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.equalityhumanrights.com\/guidance\/equal-pay\/why-equal-pay-matters?return-url=https%3A\/\/www.equalityhumanrights.com\/search%3Fkeys%3Dwhy%2Bequal%2Bpay%2Bmatters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Equality and Human Rights commission<\/a>, who act as Great Britain\u2019s national equality body. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They suggest that ultimately, <em>\u201cpaying women less than men has far-reaching implications for society by contributing to the gender pay gap, as women\u2019s lower pension contributions contribute to a higher likelihood of experiencing poverty in later life.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-can-employers-help-close-the-gender-pay-gap\">How can employers help close the gender pay gap?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s safe to say that it won\u2019t be long until the fight to help close the gender pay gap arrives at your company\u2019s doorstep. The experts behind HR Magazine suggest that it will bode well for employers to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrmagazine.co.uk\/content\/insights\/why-organisations-should-be-planning-for-pay-transparency-sooner-rather-than-later\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plan to embrace pay transparency sooner rather than later<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Around the world, there are also several laws that have either just been introduced, or are on the way, which require companies to disclose information that makes it easier for employees to compare salaries, and expose existing gender pay gaps. We will go into them later. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now is a good time to get involved and lead by example. There are a few ways you can do so:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"introduce-pay-transparency\">Introduce pay transparency<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditionally, people have been uncomfortable discussing salaries at work either because of a pay secrecy clause in their contract, didn\u2019t know how or frankly, because they don\u2019t want to. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But breaking the taboo around discussing salaries is one of the best ways to address pay equality in the workplace. It also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/britain\/2018\/04\/07\/forcing-employers-to-reveal-their-gender-pay-gaps-is-making-them-think?ppccampaignID=&amp;ppcadID=&amp;ppcgclID=&amp;ppccampaignID=&amp;ppcadID=&amp;ppcgclID=&amp;utm_medium=cpc.adword.pd&amp;utm_source=google&amp;ppccampaignID=18156330227&amp;ppcadID=&amp;utm_campaign=a.22brand_pmax&amp;utm_content=conversion.direct-response.anonymous&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjwx_eiBhBGEiwA15gLN-T3hZUGGfCITpCgnKf3Kij9VUiph9S3oVShPPWNg7sojloEB0v_sBoChawQAvD_BwE&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">forces companies to think<\/a>, sparking a change in employment practices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Christian Sutherland-Wong, Glassdoor\u2019s Chief Executive Officer suggests that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glassdoor.co.uk\/blog\/pay-transparency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">every company should be embracing pay transparency<\/a>. And that, <em>\u201cby removing salary secrecy, employers can address potential pay gaps and ensure equal pay for equal work.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cSalary transparency empowers job seekers and employees to understand better what fair pay looks like for their experience and skills. In addition, employers see the benefits of a more productive and engaged workforce.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"end-pay-secrecy-clauses\">End pay secrecy clauses<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/worklife\/article\/20210708-pay-secrecy-why-some-workers-cant-discuss-salaries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to the BBC<\/a>, traditionally, companies used pay secrecy clauses in employment contracts to promote pay secrecy either covertly or overtly, because it often saves them money. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But this practice has a negative ripple effect \u201c<em>particularly [on] women and members of minority groups who tend to be paid less than white male counterparts,\u201d as \u201cthese groups face more challenges negotiating for fair pay \u2013 which then feeds into the enduring wage gap.\u201d <\/em>The never ending cycle is relentless. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, some countries have started introducing laws and legislation to end pay secrecy clauses. Australia is one of the latest to impose a nationwide ban. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of 7th December 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lexology.com\/library\/detail.aspx?g=a3372896-8c79-43ee-84ba-216ad3732f8f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Australian employees were given the right<\/a> to elect whether they share information about their compensation or terms and conditions of employment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later this year, all pay secrecy clauses will be null and void on or after 7th December 2023. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/councils\/forbeshumanresourcescouncil\/2023\/02\/02\/how-to-introduce-pay-transparency-to-help-close-the-gender-pay-gap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lynne Marie Finn<\/a>, the President and CEO of Broadleaf believes that this is the right way forward. \u201c<em>Pay transparency is designed to help employers and employees avoid discrimination in discussing, disclosing or inquiring about compensation, which ultimately could eradicate the current wage gap based on gender.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"introduce-equal-employment-opportunities\">Introduce equal employment opportunities<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acas.org.uk\/improving-equality-diversity-and-inclusion#:~:text=Equality%20in%20the%20workplace%20means,person's%20sex%2C%20age%20or%20race.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The experts at ACAS<\/a> describe equality in the workplace as equal job opportunities and fairness for employees and job applicants. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter what industry or profession you\u2019re in, fair employment still matters in this day and age. For many businesses, local legislation and laws tend to dictate what actions need to be done. A practical example might be the UK laws under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/equality-act-2010-guidance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Equality Act 2010<\/a>, which has a specific <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/ukdsi\/2017\/9780111152010\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gender pay gap information regulation<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This usually results in annual information gathering to review employees backgrounds and genders, as well as introducing workplace policies around this area to prevent things such as discrimination by gender, race, age and disability. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The key is making sure your business has the right policies in place to look after your team, that goes beyond seeing them as statistics and output machines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"look-after-your-workforce-with-employment-hero\">Look after your workforce with 91±¬ΑΟ<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking after your team should be your number one priority when it comes to workplace wellness.
