It\u2019s led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tetaurawhiri.govt.nz\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Te Taura Whiri<\/a> (the M\u0101ori Language Commission) with the ultimate goal of 1 million speakers of te reo M\u0101ori by 2040.\n<h2 id=\"what-is-the-history-of-te-wiki-o-te-reo-m\u0101ori\">What is the history of Te Wiki o te Reo M\u0101ori?<\/h2>\nThe history of the M\u0101ori language for the last two centuries <a href=\"https:\/\/nzhistory.govt.nz\/culture\/maori-language-week\/history-of-the-maori-language\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has been complicated<\/a>. While it was the predominant language of Aotearoa New Zealand in the early 19th century, its usage was affected as more English speakers arrived in the country. By the 20th century, use of the language by M\u0101ori was actively suppressed and many older M\u0101ori still have memories of being punished for speaking their native language at school.\n\nBy the 1970s, a cultural movement grew to save the language before it was completely lost.
