With more customers, managing staff rosters, and everything else, it can feel like a mad rush to the finish line.\n\nIn all the chaos, it\u2019s easy to forget key details, such as the requirement to notify employees <a href=\"https:\/\/www.employment.govt.nz\/leave-and-holidays\/annual-holidays\/annual-closedowns-and-holidays\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">14 days in advance<\/a> of any closure.\n\nWe\u2019ve wrapped up some top tips for making sure you\u2019re ahead of the game this summer, so you can make the most of the busy holiday season.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"four-public-holidays-just-around-the-corner\">Four public holidays just around the corner<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With four public holidays coming up soon, now is a great time to get prepared so you can maximise productivity over this period. <strong>Christmas Day (25 December)<\/strong> Christmas day is both a public holiday and a \u2018restricted trading day\u2019 \u2013 meaning most people aren\u2019t working, and many businesses will close, with exceptions including places like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.employment.govt.nz\/leave-and-holidays\/public-holidays\/restricted-trading-days-for-shops\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">petrol stations and pharmacies.<\/a><strong>Boxing Day (26 December)<\/strong> Boxing day is also a public holiday, although it isn\u2019t a restricted trading day \u2013 businesses are free to operate as per usual, and many Kiwis will be out shopping for Boxing Day deals. In fact, you may want to check you have <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/nz\/blog\/effective-holiday-rostering\/\">rostered enough staff <\/a>for Boxing Day if you expect lots of foot traffic. <strong>New Year\u2019s Day (1 January) and Day after New Year\u2019s Day (2 January)<\/strong> New Year\u2019s Day and the Day after New Year&#8217;s Day are both public holidays, but trade is not restricted during either. Staying informed about these requirements can help boost your compliance confidence, and give your business the best chance of success over the holidays.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-two-must-haves-for-staffing-on-public-holidays\">The two must-haves for staffing on public holidays<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\nDepending on the employment type, a public holiday may entitle an employee to a paid day off work. However it\u2019s important to be aware that there are clear rules around when you can ask someone to get back on the tools.
