Our workforce carries the lowest AI guilt and the lowest replacement anxiety of any market we surveyed, while Kiwi businesses are the slowest to treat AI as central to how they operate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The confidence paradox<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">This tension sits at the heart of what we\u2019ve called the AI paradox. New Zealand businesses are behind in AI adoption, but 57% of Kiwi workers think AI is helping them develop valuable skills. Only 34% think it\u2019s making them more replaceable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">That shows a workforce leaning into technology. The problem is that leaning in only creates value if the business leans in with them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A training mismatch&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">If you dig into how Kiwis are actually learning AI, the gap starts to make a bit more sense. More than half of workers (51%) are teaching themselves through social media. At the same time, New Zealand workers are the most likely of any surveyed market to say AI training is the employer&#8217;s responsibility, rather than something they should own themselves.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">So we have a standoff: workers expect their employers to build the capability but many employers still aren\u2019t embracing AI. Only 17% of NZ employers say AI skills in new employees are now essential, with 33% preferring to see them as a bonus. While both sides wait, the skills that do get built are picked up from TikTok feeds and Instagram reels.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to do about it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">Embracing AI doesn\u2019t require a massive budget or a team of data scientists. For most SMEs, it requires just a handful of deliberate moves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\"><strong>Name AI as a leadership priority. <\/strong>The single biggest difference between the businesses moving and the businesses stalling is whether someone at the top has actually said AI matters. Put AI on the agenda, assign an owner and make it clear that it matters.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--1-5);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--1-5)\"><strong>Fill the training vacuum on purpose. <\/strong>Your people are already teaching themselves via social media, so redirect that energy. Short lunch-and-learns, shared prompt libraries, and team demos bring that floating knowledge directly in-house.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\"><strong>Set clear norms around disclosure.<\/strong> The feeling that AI is \u201ccheating\u201d is widespread, with 38% of Kiwi workers admitting to feeling this way. When there are no guidelines, people hide what they\u2019re doing. State clearly where AI is encouraged, where a human needs to sign off and when to disclose its use.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--1-5);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--1-5)\"><strong>Make AI fluency part of hiring. <\/strong>Only 24% of New Zealand employers treat AI skills as entry-level criteria, against 30% in Australia. You don\u2019t need to demand mastery, but prioritising curiosity and a willingness to learn will pay off in the long term.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\"><strong>Start with one real workflow.<\/strong> Pick a routine task your team does every week: something like drafting proposals, summarising meetings or triaging support queries. Apply AI to that one thing and measure the results. A concrete win will build the momentum you need.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The window is open<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">The uncomfortable read on this data is that New Zealand businesses are behind Australia. The more useful read?
