The posts are good, they hit the right notes and are ready to go. Then that coordinator spends the next half hour rewording it, roughing up the polish and sitting on it until after lunch so it doesn\u2019t look like it appeared too fast. The work was done before morning tea but the rest was theatre, performed for an audience of nobody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">Multiply that quiet performance across a workforce and you have one of the least discussed costs of AI at work: guilt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-heading-2-xl-font-size\">The feeling is more common than anyone admits<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">According to our new <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/nz\/news\/ai-paradox-report-2026\/\">AI Paradox research<\/a>, over a third (37%) of New Zealand workers feel guilty using AI. Even when it helps them produce high-quality work, they don\u2019t feel efficient, but like they got away with something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">This guilt is affecting how people perceive their own work. Some 38% of workers agree that using AI to do parts of their job feels like cheating and 32% admit to presenting AI-generated work as their own. Read those two numbers together and a clear pattern appears. Employees are caught in an imposter cycle, using AI to keep up while feeling forced to hide it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-heading-2-xl-font-size\">Where the productivity actually leaks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">When staff feel guilty about AI use, that feeling can cause issues for businesses. For one, it leads to underuse. A tool that could handle a task in minutes goes unused because reaching for it feels like a shortcut. Team members grind through the slow way to feel as though they\u2019ve earned the result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">There\u2019s also that previously mentioned disguise work, where time is spent making efficient output look laboured. That guilt can lead to silence. When people believe their AI use is a secret, they never share what works. The prompt that saves an hour stays on one laptop, instead of spreading to the whole team. The single biggest engine of productivity gains, people copying what works from each other, never starts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-heading-2-xl-font-size\">Your best people feel it most<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">This feeling affects everyone, but the workers most fluent with AI are often the most conflicted about its use. They\u2019re assertive about what AI can do for them and anxious about what it might do to them at the same time. The very people extracting the most value are the ones most likely to feel they shouldn\u2019t be doing so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">This means that often your strongest performers quietly cap their own output to stay inside a boundary nobody actually drew for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-heading-2-xl-font-size\">Clearing up two myths that keep guilt alive<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">Much of this guilt rests on some common assumptions. First, that using AI means the work is not really yours. In reality, the judgement, direction, editing and accountability can (and should) still be entirely human. AI drafts. But a person decides what is good enough to send.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">The second assumption is that fast means lazy. Speed is the point of almost every tool a business already pays for. Nobody feels guilty using a spellchecker or a calculator; AI sits on the same spectrum. Treating it differently is a habit, not a rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">The reason these myths persist is that in most workplaces, no one has said otherwise. Silence gets filled with the most anxious interpretation available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-heading-2-xl-font-size\">If you lead a team, start here<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">The good news is that guilt responds quickly to clarity. Employers have the opportunity to encourage efficiency and performance by making their position on AI clear.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">First, ask yourself whether your team actually knows if AI is allowed. If you\u2019ve never said it plainly, assume they don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">Second, ask whether anyone knows where the lines are. When teams know exactly what is off limits, the space inside those lines stops feeling like a grey area to feel guilty about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">Third, ask when your team last shared what was working in their AI use. If the answer is never, that\u2019s the silence tax in action. Make showing off a good AI use case a normal, celebrated thing: the knowledge-sharing will benefit everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-heading-2-xl-font-size\">The bottom line<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">Over a third of New Zealand workers feel guilty for AI and it\u2019s costing businesses in lost opportunity and productivity. That is a fixable problem and it requires a clear message from the top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-paragraph-2-m-font-size\">Unspoken guilt acts as a silent tax on productivity. Businesses that turn a blind eye will continue to suffer from underuse, performative effort and siloed expertise.
