In sectors such as retail, hospitality and tourism, the summer holiday period is often their peak and the need for additional employees can become pressing very, very quickly. That\u2019s not even factoring in the possibility of additional employees on leave for the Christmas period, New Year and other seasonal holidays. Any <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/nz\/blog\/leave-management-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">employee on leave needs cover<\/a>, and that can quickly cause issues if operations are already pretty hectic.\n\nCasual employees can be a great solution to this issue. You can bring in staff to cover those gaps and have extra hands over the busy period.\n\nHiring seasonal and casual employees is also a good opportunity to <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/nz\/products\/applicant-tracking-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">create a talent pipeline<\/a> of potential full-time employees further down the line, should you lose existing employees or experience business growth. You should refer to the general definition of casual employment as well. This isn\u2019t a legal definition but legal cases suggests the following defines a casual relationship:\n<ul>\n \t<li aria-level=\"1\">There is no guarantee of work on a specific day.<\/li>\n \t<li aria-level=\"1\">There is no pattern of work.<\/li>\n \t<li aria-level=\"1\">The amount of work will fluctuate.<\/li>\n \t<li aria-level=\"1\">Each time the employee accepts an offer of work it\u2019s considered a new period of employment. If the employer stops offering work, this doesn\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.employment.govt.nz\/starting-employment\/who-is-an-employee\/types-of-employee\/#scrollto-casual-employees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">count as a dismissal<\/a>. The only exception is if the employer sends the employee home in the middle of a shift or reneges on an agreed shift.\n<h3>Leave<\/h3>\nCasual employees don\u2019t have set hours so it may be not practical for them to take annual holidays. The employee and employer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.employment.govt.nz\/starting-employment\/who-is-an-employee\/types-of-employee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">can agree that an extra 8%<\/a> will be paid on top of their wages or salary instead of taking annual holidays.\n\nCasual employees <a href=\"https:\/\/www.employment.govt.nz\/starting-employment\/who-is-an-employee\/types-of-employee\/#scrollto-casual-employees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">are also entitled<\/a> to sick leave and bereavement leave after six months of starting work if during that time they have worked an average of at least 10 hours a week, and at least one hour a week or 40 hours a month.\n<h2><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-32469\" style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif; font-size: 16px;\" src=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2023\/11\/Blog-header-7-copy-1.png\" alt=\"Queenstown historical ship\" width=\"1728\" height=\"1014\" \/>How can employers retain high-performing seasonal hires for future holiday seasons?<\/h2>\nSo much of the likelihood of casual employees returning for future peak seasons depends on the experience that you, as the employer, gives them. Are you prioritising <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/nz\/resources\/employee-experience-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">employee experience<\/a> in your company? If you\u2019re not yet, now is as good a time as any to start.\n\nThe employee experience refers to the entire experience throughout the <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/nz\/blog\/full-recruitment-life-cycle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">employee lifecycle<\/a>, right from the initial attraction stage as a candidate, all the way through to offboarding. Areas including the hiring process, onboarding, training and development, career growth, employee benefits, culture, and more, are just some of the factors that help shape an employee\u2019s perception of your business.\n\nFor a casual employee, that entire lifecycle is fast-tracked. Their recruitment and onboarding experience should be smooth, their time to settle in should be short and the culture should be welcoming.
