The national initiative encourages Australians to ask their friends, family, colleagues or acquaintances a very important question\u2014are you ok?\n\nEach day, eight Australians will take their own life. This affects not just their immediate friends and family, but causes a ripple effect of destruction that can take decades to fade out. Mental health affects all of us at one point or another \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackdoginstitute.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/black-dog-institute-mental-health-toolkit-2017.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">1 in 5 people<\/a> will experience mental illness in their lifetime \u2013 and yet there is still a stigma that surrounds asking for help.\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ruok.org.au\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">R U OK? Day<\/a> does an amazing job of normalising a conversation that can sometimes be difficult to have. However, there are still those who question whether the workplace is the right place to have that conversation \u2013 and they couldn\u2019t be more wrong.\n\nOn average, Australians spend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/everyday\/surprising-facts-about-how-we-spend-our-time\/10188202\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">37 to 42 hours per week at work.<\/a> It might not sound like a lot, but ask yourself \u2013 how are you spending the other 126 hours of the week? 49 are spent asleep, leaving 77 for everything else: kids, shopping, downtime, appointments. Life gets in the way, whittling the time for meaningful conversations down further and further. And that\u2019s if you\u2019re statistically average.\n\nThe fact is, <a href=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/australia\/full-time-employment\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">8.85 million Australians<\/a> spend the majority of their time at work, making it one of the most important places for people to connect with one another, or at the very least, learn to recognise if their colleague is struggling.\n\nR U OK? Day is an opportunity for Australian employers to not just educate their employees about the importance of checking in on their colleagues, but also promote a culture where employees feel safe enough to answer honestly. So as an employer, what steps can you take to ensure your employees are mentally well?\n<h2 id=\"be-informed\">Be informed<\/h2>\nAccording to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackdoginstitute.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/1-facts_figures.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Black Dog Institute<\/a>, one in five Australians aged 16-85 will experience mental illness in any year. What\u2019s more concerning is that an estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/everymind.org.au\/understanding-mental-health\/mental-health\/mental-health-key-facts\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">45% of Australians<\/a> will experience mental illness at some stage in their lifetime.\n\nThe pandemic made things worse again, with <a href=\"https:\/\/headspace.org.au\/assets\/Uploads\/COVID-Client-Impact-Report-FINAL-11-8-20.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">headspace.org.au<\/a> finding that 74% of young people reported that their mental health got worse after the outbreak. And while Covid-19 isn&#8217;t as stress-inducing as before, there was little respite before rising interest rates and a rental crisis stepped into its place.\n\nAccording to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/politics\/federal\/mental-health-support-not-accessible-as-cost-of-living-bites-20230320-p5ctot.html\">Matthew McLean from Suicide Prevention Australia<\/a>, 46% of people were experiencing high levels of cost-of-living distress, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/politics\/federal\/amid-a-relentless-barrage-of-crises-middle-aged-men-fall-through-the-cracks-20230124-p5cf34.html\">suicide numbers increasing last year<\/a>. Not only is the cost of living causing mental health issues, it&#8217;s also a barrier when it comes to seeking help.\n\nDespite the numbers saying otherwise, 1 in 2 managers believe their employees are unaffected by mental illness. Employers should make it a priority to be properly informed about mental illness and acknowledge that:\n<ol>\n<li>Mental illness is more common than people realise.<\/li>\n<li>It is caused by a number of different factors, including genetic, biological, social and environmental factors.<\/li>\n<li>People who are mentally ill are not able to \u2018pull themselves out of it\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>With proper treatment, the vast majority of mental illness cases are treatable.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\nBy understanding the above, employers are able to empathise with their employees, inspiring them to establish policies and programs to create a mentally healthy workplace. They\u2019re also better positioned to lead by example; visible and <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/sg\/resources\/guide-to-boosting-employee-mental-wellbeing\/\">active support of mental wellbeing from leadership<\/a> will prompt greater engagement from employees.\n<h2 id=\"whats-the-benefit\">What\u2019s the benefit?<\/h2>\nUnder the Work Health and Safety Act (2011), employers must protect the mental and physical wellbeing of their employees. Physical wellbeing makes sense when you consider the massive amount of litigation that surrounds injuries sustained at work in the past 30 years. Now, mental injury is now proving just as litigious as physical injuries \u2013 and rightly so.\n\nEmployers have more incentive than self-preservation to develop mentally well workplaces. When you account for absenteeism, productivity loss, high turnover and compensation, Australian businesses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackdoginstitute.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/black-dog-institute-mental-health-toolkit-2017.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lose $10.9 billion per year<\/a> due to undiagnosed mental illnesses.\n\nOn the flip side, research shows that workplaces that promote mental wellbeing are more productive, attract and retain better employees and can reduce turnover by up to 51%. What\u2019s more is that a recent study of Financial Times Stock Exchange 100 companies found that those who address mental health and wellbeing in their annual reports <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/why-companies-should-care-about-the-well-being-of-their_b_59f398c3e4b05f0ade1b572c\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">were 3 times more profitable than those who didn\u2019t.<\/a> The reality is that mentally well workplaces are good for both employees and a business\u2019 bottom line.\n<h2 id=\"how-can-you-help\">How can you help?<\/h2>\nNow that you know <em>why<\/em> you should invest in the mental health of your employees, how can you put a plan into action? Believe it or not, investing in the mental wellbeing of your employees doesn\u2019t cost the earth. For the most part, all it will cost is the time to implement it.\n<h3 id=\"1-have-a-mental-health-and-wellbeing-policy\">1. Have a mental health and wellbeing policy<\/h3>\nHaving a mental health and wellbeing policy shows a level of transparency that few other initiatives can provide. It\u2019s an opportunity to communicate to all employees that their mental wellbeing is a priority, that you will provide them with support should they need it and that they do not need to fear the stigma of mental illness. Not only do they provide confidential, 24\/7 qualified counselling for every employee, it\u2019s also a clear sign that you support your employees\u2019 mental wellbeing.\n\nResearch shows that having an EAP doesn\u2019t just benefit those who use it. Create social groups<\/h3>\nSupporting the mental health of your employees isn\u2019t just about providing them with the services they need when they\u2019re mentally unwell. It\u2019s also about building a workplace with meaningful connections.\n\nAfter the pandemic, social isolation is a growing concern for many, and for some, work is the only place they get to interact with others. Promote learning<\/h3>\nA common trait of mentally well workplaces is the opportunity for personal and <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/sg\/resources\/how-to-coach-employees-in-the-workplace\/\">career development<\/a>.
