As if school runs, work responsibilities, activities and deadlines weren&#8217;t enough, now parents are dealing with homeschooling, quickly-assembled home offices and family time 24 hours a day. Cue panic.\n\nDespite the stress, pandemic remote working has been illuminating for families and employers. Most businesses have been forced to trial home working options &#8211; with many seeing that it actually had little negative impact on productivity.\n\nIt also, however, demonstrated that some businesses are <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/sg\/blog\/outdated-workplace-practices\/\">still behind the times<\/a> when it comes to working parents. Take the controversial case of the council in Sydney, Australia, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/nsw\/a-work-space-is-a-work-space-council-banned-staff-supervising-kids-while-working-from-home-20210708-p587vo.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">banned their staff from supervising kids<\/a> while working from home during the 2021 lockdown\u2026\n\nWhether we\u2019re in or out of lockdown, there are plenty of things that managers and HR leaders can do to support working parents. We spoke with three of our own to explore some of the best things to do &#8211; and what to avoid.\n<h3 id=\"support-flexible-working\">Support flexible working<\/h3>\nThis is a big one. Allowing team members to take a <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/sg\/resources\/flexible-working-policy-template\/\">flexible approach to working<\/a> is one of the most high-impact decisions employers can make to help working parents.\n\nEasing the rigidity of the 9-5 and in-office standard can be transformative for teams. It\u2019s a clear way to show your understanding that parenting doesn\u2019t have a set timeframe. During lockdowns or not, remote working can help parents better approach school schedules, their kids\u2019 needs and their workloads.\n\nBrigid found remote working extremely helpful in finding the balance between parenting and developing a career. <em>\u201cIt took me 5 years to find a job that actually helped me to balance parenthood alongside feeling like I was working towards my career. It&#8217;s little things like being able to walk my son to school in the morning and he can just walk home, I don\u2019t have to leave work early to do that.\u201d<\/em>\n\nHaving this flexibility often helps reduce interruptions in the workday, as parents aren\u2019t having to leave work for parenting duties, losing time to the commute. If a child is sick and needs to stay home from school, parents can work from home instead of being forced to take leave.\n\n<em>\u201cIt\u2019s win-win and reciprocal,\u201d <\/em>says Brigid.<em> \u201cIt\u2019s also that recognition that I am an adult and I will get my work done.\u201d<\/em>\n\nPandemic lockdowns and the introduction of homeschooling makes flexible working even more important. With the structure of regular schooling gone, a massive strain was added to parents as they fulfilled parenting and teaching responsibilities, coupled with the cabin fever that everyone experiences when they can\u2019t leave the house.\n\n<em>\u201cWhen lockdown started, the organisation [that I worked for] expected us to work the same hours regardless of whether we had children with us during the day,\u201d<\/em> says Nat.\n\nAdded responsibilities and a lack of leniency can put parents on a <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/sg\/blog\/signs-that-you-are-suffering-burnout\/\">fast track to burnout<\/a>. Nat explains how support from a manager helped her stay on track amongst the pressures.\n\n<em>\u201cMy previous boss realised I was under the pump and getting close to burnout so she worked with me at re-assessing timelines and deliverables. She spoke to key stakeholders and advocated on my behalf to create a staggered schedule so I was better able to prioritise and deliver the most important outputs quickly.\u201d<\/em>\n<em>\u201cShe also understood that I had to work irregular hours to accommodate my son and was happy to allow this, even though the rest of the organisation did not.\u201d<\/em>\n\n<h3 id=\"trust-your-people\">Trust your people<\/h3>\nTrust in your team goes hand-in-hand with flexible working. We\u2019d even argue that effective flexible working is not possible without it.\n\nChris says that one of the best things a manager can do to support him as a working parent is providing <em>\u201cflexibility to take care of my kids, when sick, for pick up and drop off &#8211; and trusting that I can do my job from home.\u201d<\/em>\n\nYour employees want to see your business thrive. They understand that they have goals and deadlines to hit, and they don\u2019t need to be monitored in order to complete these tasks.\n\n<em>\u201cWe are adults at the end of the day, and sometimes there\u2019s this implied message from some employers &#8211; I need you in the office, I need to watch you, I need to supervise the work that I&#8217;m paying you to do,<\/em>\u201d says Brigid.<em> \u201cAnd there\u2019s something inherently unadult about that to me. You\u2019re paying me and I&#8217;m a responsible person, I&#8217;m going to perform and do my duties because that\u2019s our agreement.\u201d<\/em>\n\nFocusing on output instead of hours, keeping lines of communication up and being transparent about expectations can help everyone feel empowered.\n\nIf you don\u2019t trust your team to do their work, this is likely indicative of a larger issue. What are some simple and practical things, like managing priorities, that could make a huge difference?\n\nWhile this is so important for working parents, all of your team members will appreciate an empathetic management style. <em>\u201cI had an employer &#8216;before kids&#8217; which sent me a mobile charger when I was sick at home and expected me to work when very unwell,\u201d <\/em>says Chris.\n\n<em>\u201cIt was not a pleasant experience. The manager was quite robotic, with no empathy. I heard countless stories from friends, too &#8211; like people with chronic illnesses being asked to make sure they hit deadlines and not asked if they are ok. Something that isn&#8217;t a priority for many businesses is employee\/human empathy. Customer empathy is often a priority but not employee empathy.\u201d<\/em>\n<h3 id=\"create-a-culture-that-celebrates-parenthood\">Create a culture that celebrates parenthood<\/h3>\nIf managers at your company are empathetic, they have trust in their team, and they\u2019re endorsing remote work &#8211; your journey to becoming a fantastic workplace for parents is almost complete. The last thing to do is to create a culture that celebrates parenthood.\n\n<em>\u201c[At 91±¬ΑΟ] we celebrate people who are falling pregnant, we celebrate when someone gives birth,\u201d <\/em>says Brigid. <em>\u201cIt speaks to a culture where having kids is not only accepted but it\u2019s also celebrated, which is still not common practice.\u201d<\/em>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/sg\/blog\/support-pregnant-employees\/\">Celebrate pregnancy<\/a> and birth for all parents who are a part of your workplace.
