Others may have no symptoms.\n\nWhile the majority of women experience regular cognitive function throughout their pregnancy, a lack of sleep, higher levels of stress or underlying physical\/mental health issues can negatively impact this.\n\nIf an expecting employee experiences extreme fatigue, stress or morning sickness, they may require additional leave or reduced hours during the first trimester if a business cannot accommodate necessary workplace changes.\n\nDuring the final trimester, we recommend reducing the number of total hours worked unless a certified medical practitioner approves them. <strong>In some cases, long hours may be unavoidable<\/strong>. In the event of such circumstances, consider how the job role can be modified to reduce potential risks and ensure the safety of both mother and child.\n\nWhere feasible, this could mean implementing flexible working arrangements or alternate duties. <strong>Ceasing work entirely should be a last resort<\/strong> after careful consideration of medical and workplace instructions.\n<h2 id=\"identify-and-address-pregnancy-related-discrimination\">Identify and address pregnancy-related discrimination<\/h2>\nThroughout the various stages of pregnancy, the needs of every woman &#8211; both physical and emotional &#8211; are subject to change. <strong>Accepting these changes is not a sign of weakness<\/strong>, and asking for help does not make a woman incapable of her role.\n\nThese highly outdated misconceptions are the reason for majority of sex discrimination claims reported each year. Throughout their pregnancy, women are commonly faced with the expectation of performing at the same level.\n\nThese expectations not only stem from bosses and fellow colleagues &#8211; but are also self-imposed. Under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.gov.au\/Details\/C2014C00002\">Australian Sex Discrimination Act<\/a>, <strong>it&#8217;s illegal for an employer to discriminate against a woman because of her pregnancy<\/strong>. This also includes parental discrimination.\n\nExamples of sex discrimination against a pregnant employee include:\n<ul>\n<li>Asking an employee if they are expecting<\/li>\n<li>Limiting opportunities for a promotion or leadership position<\/li>\n<li>Making inappropriate comments or remarks related to their pregnancy<\/li>\n<li>Termination due to pregnancy<\/li>\n<li>Denying sick or maternity\/parental leave benefits<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nUnfortunately, the numbers show <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/everyday\/pregnancy-discrimination-what-to-do\/10378212\">one in two Australian mothers<\/a> are subject to pregnancy-related discrimination in the workplace. That being said, they must provide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairwork.gov.au\/leave\/parental-leave\">at least ten weeks notice<\/a> before applying for maternity leave.\n\nAs an employer, you&#8217;re encouraged to <a href=\"https:\/\/employmenthero.com\/sg\/resources\/psychological-safety-survey-template\/\">create a safe and secure environment<\/a> for your team to alert you of their pregnancy. <strong>Early engagement<\/strong> allows both parties to assess any relevant risks or changes that need to be made to accommodate for the pregnancy.\n\nDetermining the unique and individual needs of expecting mothers is highly important in building a pregnancy-friendly workplace.
