The Position:Ìý
The Electrical Systems Specialist – Field Engineering is a hands-on subject matter expert responsible for the reliability, safety, and performance of mission-critical electrical infrastructure within a live data centre environment.Ìý
This roleÌýoperatesÌýat the intersection ofÌýoperations, engineering, and risk, providing deep technical leadership on electrical systems whileÌýremainingÌýactively engaged in the field. The position is accountable for engineering ownership, fault investigation, procedural governance, and uplift of operational capability across site teams.Ìý
Key Responsibility:
Electrical System OwnershipÌý
- Act as technical owner for critical electrical systems including:Ìý
- HV and LV distribution systemsÌý
- Transformers and switchboardsÌý
- Generators and fuel systemsÌý
- UPS systems and battery infrastructureÌý
- Maintain deep system knowledge including design intent, protection philosophies, discrimination studies, and recovery strategiesÌý
- Ensure systemsÌýoperateÌýwithin defined engineering, protection coordination, and reliability thresholdsÌý
Field Engineering & Fault ResponseÌý
- Provide hands-on field engineering support during:Ìý
- Major electrical events and outagesÌý
- Protection trips and nuisance alarmsÌý
- Complex fault scenariosÌý
- Commissioning, recommissioning, and post-incident recoveryÌý
- Lead on-site fault isolation, protection review, and restoration strategyÌý
- Support live operations during elevated risk activities such as switching, load transfers, and energisationÌý
Engineering Governance & ProceduresÌý
- Peer-review, and approve:Ìý
- Electrical switching proceduresÌý
- EOPs, MOPs, and SOPsÌý
- Isolation and energisation documentationÌý
- Temporary operating procedures and risk mitigationsÌý
- Ensure switching documents align with protection settings, arc flash studies, and discrimination designÌý
- Own continuous improvement of procedural quality based on operational feedback and incidentsÌý
Must-haveÌýQualifications:Ìý
Essential:Ìý
- Trade, diploma, or degree qualification in Electrical Engineering or equivalentÌý
- Extensive experience with mission-critical electrical systems (data centres, utilities, hospitals, industrial facilities, or similar)Ìý
- Strong hands-on switching and fault-finding capabilityÌý
- Experience with protection coordination and discrimination studiesÌý
- Proven experience authoring and reviewing switching proceduresÌý
- Strong understanding of redundancy philosophies (N, N+1, 2N, etc.)Ìý
Desirable:Ìý
- Authorised HV switching experienceÌý
- Experience in live data centre operationsÌý
- Commissioning and energisation exposureÌý
- Familiarity with relay configuration and event analysis softwareÌý
- Experience contributing to or leading RCAsÌý
